As the Captain and Operations crew stood looking at the ladder leading down eleven decks to Auxillary Control, Caspius dimly heard the words of Dactylus Jekk: "If you want, I can go first, sir."
There was a pause--it probably only lasted a moment, but it felt much longer--as Caspius looked from Dactylus, to Rose, to Tau. No one had escaped injury, but most of their injuries were far more severe than his own. Through good fortune and sheer Vulcan biological robustness, Caspius had made it through the engagement with only a cut on his temple and a gash on his arm. The station's crew had already evacuated, but he was doggedly determined to save the station at all costs. And so, the Ops crew were headed to Auxillary Control, from which he intended to help direct the recovery and repair operation.
Caspius held that, as a condition of rank, the commander should lead the way forward into a dangerous situation, but he also held that it was the job of the Executive Officer to protect the Captain from unnecessary risk.
"No, I will lead the way," he said, stepping into the jeffries tube and starting down the ladder before anyone could stop him. "One foot after another--and, don't look down."
A few moments later, the roar of rushing air, and he was gone.
