The S.S. Orphanus is a civilian cruiser, that was acquired and retrofitted by Janac Reska. Officially, it operates to transport families displaced by the various conflicts across the galaxy to safe areas. The ship operates with a crew of approximately 200 personnel. The remaining room on the ship is taken by displaced families, that now call the ship home. Despite the inherent risks of Janac's profession, the people that live on the ship have seen much worse. They no longer have to worry about armed enemies beaming into their camps, or being bombarded from space as they sit helpless. They now have the protection of a fully armed and operational battle cruiser. The adults on board are fully aware that their presence on the ship serves as a smoke screen for Janac's illicit dealings, however as they are safe and well provided for, it is certainly a small price to pay.
The ship itself was retrofitted with several powerful beam arrays that are able to retract into shielded compartments when not in use. These shielded compartments hide the weapons from basic surface and tactical scans, though deeper penetrating scans can detect them. The ships deadliest weapon is a single torpedo launcher which they call the "Apocalypse" launcher, or "Caly" for short. The specifics of the armament are known only to the ships command staff, but a single torpedo has been known to destroy or cripple ships with a single shot, regardless of the enemies shield strength. In addition to the weapons systems, the ship carries a variety of surprises, such as sabotage drones, and EMP probes. The ships sensors, while less powerful overall than most sensors, are specifically designed to analyze enemy ship data to exploit weaknesses.
These modifications do come at a cost. Due to the invasive nature of many of these modifications, the hull has far more critical stress points. Areas in the material that have been weakened by the added construction, make the ship far less resilient than a cruiser of similar size and capability.
