So apparently according to this story on Trekmovie.com, Orville is not quite the silly comedy the trailer promotes it as.

TL;DR: Basically MacFarlane says the show is an hour long comedy drama which is funny and a parody of sci-fi (Trek mainly ofc) but despite the promotion of the comical side it goes deeper than his usual animated fare. He basically says there is actual sci-fi writing going on as well.
This... intrigues me. I really am interested in seeing what we get here now that I've learned this info.

I think Seth is taking cues from Galaxy Quest, and is enough of a fan of the source material that he wants to do "right" by it, at least in his own eyes. (It's not like we can necessarily trust CBS to...) There will still probably be parts where his sense of humor just doesn't work for this, but at least he'll be earnest about it.

On another note, I love that he is using a mix of CG and an actual physical filming model like pre-2000s Trek. That's some serious business, and really cool.
