U.S.S. Adamant
NCC-90286
RELIANT ADVANCED LIGHT CRUISER

QZnIxs8.jpg

The U.S.S. Adamant is a Reliant-class vessel that serves primarily as a light patrol and interdiction cruiser, with flexible escort and science options. Her keel was laid down in January 2415 at Utopia Planitia shipyards. Taking two full years to build and test, Reliant hull registry NCC-90286 was fully commissioned in January 2417 as the USS Adamant and delivered to the 38th Fleet.

With Starfleet's need to replace its easily-destroyed workhorse fleet in the face of the seemingly endless conflict of the early 25th century, the Reliant-class is both a massive upgrade to its Miranda roots and a definite precursor of the small yet powerful cruisers that form the bulk of 25th century Starfleet's front line. Sporting impressive maneuverability and high durability, the Reliant fills both escort and cruiser roles with equal comfort.

While the Reliant's armaments are only average for a ship of her size and class, Starfleet's latest advances in miniaturization technology give the Reliant flexible combat performance that is nothing to scoff at. Six dorsal and five ventral Type-XIV Phaser Beam Arrays provide full coverage across all three axis. Each array is rated at 140,000 TW at full discharge. With auxiliary power fed into weapons and special attention given to both heat generation and relay burnout, a given array is capable of sustained fire at 110% rated charge for 20 minutes or 200% charge for one shot. Independent targeting and discharge subroutines in each array's FCS allow simultaneous fire with variably distributed power output at up to six locked targets per bow array or three targets from all others. Thus, at maximum lock patterns and EPS relay limits, the Adamant can maintain suppressive phaser fire on up to 42 individual targets.

The Reliant class boasts the latest in compact projectile launch systems. Four launchers in the dorsal pod each use a tri-tube system to allow a simultaneous fire-reload-charge pattern for sustained fire in combat. With all three tubes double loaded and charged, a 'spread' of up to six torpedoes per launcher can be released on special orders. As with all projectile launchers, the Reliant class natively supports both photon and quantum torpedoes, and a full range of probe designs.

Her warp core, despite its compact size, is one of the most efficient cores designed both by power output and fuel requirements. Modern high efficiency impulse cores, along with auxiliary reactors, provide this small ship a remarkable amount of spare power. EPS and warp field systems tied into the main power network are designed to be easily serviced and highly flexible, given the ship's lack of space for spare parts or redundant systems. Utilizing the latest self-healing EPS technology, overloads and burnouts are intended to be only temporary in all but the most destructive cases. Unlike larger starships, the Reliant cannot carry any spare MARA cores. Core ejection is therefore a last resort.

Her computer core, utilizing isolinear circuitry, is supplemented by a pair of phased quantum co-processors instead of the relatively fragile bio-neural gel packs found in other starships. While bio-neural gel packs are far better suited to the problems encountered by science ships who require systems capable of "fuzzy logic", these are not required for the Reliant. Instead, a solution to improve the speed of navigation and combat "number crunching" commonly encountered by all ships at a lower power cost was required by the Reliant class, which lacked the real estate for larger computer cores.

Crew comforts are greatly improved over the older Miranda and Centaur classes. High efficiency replicators are found even in enlisted quarters, giving each member of the crew access to their rations with convenience. The Reliant-class operates two transporter rooms. The secondary transporter is located in Main Engineering and doubles as an industrial replicator. In keeping with the ship's focus on space-saving and flexibility, ship wide holographic emitters allow for photonic crew replacements in exchange for increased power load. Standard available programs include Medical, Command, Security, Engineering, and Operations. While holograms are not as flexible as the crew they replace, automatic hologram activation protocols allow the ship to maintain full operational capacity in combat despite ongoing casualties.

The USS Adamant includes all these advancements and more. A brand new ship fresh off the proving grounds, she still had that 'new ship smell' as of her first command. Proud of their work yet cognizant of the realities of space travel, engineers at Utopia Planitia joked on delivery, "She comes with a nacelle to nacelle warranty - when both nacelles leave the yard, the warranty expires."

K8V3Zio.pngCPT Viktor Locke, Commanding Officer

Captain Locke, the commanding officer of the USS Adamant, has a long and storied history with his previous ship, the USS Freeman. Twenty one years on the same ship leaves an odd effect on any officer, and Viktor Locke is no different. His style of command has developed into one of discipline and decorum, placing heavy emphasis against impropriety aboard the ship even if off duty. While just and fair, Viktor has made it absolutely clear that he will accept nothing less than the best behavior from his crew. His senior staff reflect that philosophy, and so working under his command is often seen to be an unusually formalized posting. Despite these drawbacks, Captain Locke does not shy from signing promotion recommendations for those who perform well, and if one can tolerate the taciturn and strict atmosphere on his ship they can usually expect to leave with a higher grade.
e6Ait3z.pngCDR Meryl Andersson, Executive Officer

Commander Andersson is the executive officer of the USS Adamant. A woman of poise and resolution, she acts as the right hand of the Captain in all matters that do not require his direct involvement. She speaks with an imperious clarity, leaving her subordinates with zero question as to her expectations. Tolerating little in the way of impropriety, the Commander is often seen as unapproachable or even intimidating. She encourages delegation of authority and responsibility of duty. In other words, she empowers her subordinates to carry out their duties with a measure of independence but holds each to a very high standard without the comfort of simply following orders. Those who draw her attention are recognized duly and quickly for their achievements, or punished harshly for their failures. While little is known of the Commander's personal life, it is known that she is both married and a mother.
WdUwGpg.pngLCDR T'Par, Second Officer, Chief Science Officer

Lt. Commander T'par is a Vulcan of middling age, serving as the Second Officer of the USS Adamant and science station bridge officer. Fairly typical of most Vulcans in that she presents and entirely logic-focused demeanor, her input is strongly valued among the senior officers. She enjoys a professional friendship with Commander Andersson, perhaps the only member of the crew other than Captain Locke to do so. She is somewhat odd in that she has been known to frown somewhat often. Most who know her personally realize this is merely a facial tic, not an expression of emotion. Lt. Commander T'par graduated from the Vulcan Science Academy in the mid 24th Century and has served aboard multiple science ships, yet has consistently declined a command position. It is her belief that a command position requires some measure of emotion rather than pure logic, and so she has carefully tailored her career to serve in advisory positions.
Vpmdwm8.pngLCDR Ozzral Masin, Chief Engineer

Lt. Commander Masin, a Bolian, is a man of two faces. Taciturn and serious on duty, he is well regarded for his expertise in EPS technology. Having served in Starfleet once before, he left to pursue an academic career. Achieving a doctorate in electroplasmics, Ozzral taught at the Buenos Aires Academy of Engineering for five years, while his theories on EPS containment were published in at least two scientific journals. Deciding his destiny lay among the stars rather than the classroom, Ozzral rejoined Starfleet. Lt. Commander Masin spends most of his time in Main Engineering, as Chief Engineers are wont to do. Off duty, he has been known to share time with crewmen as much as senior officers, a throwback to his easygoing professor background.
gsVWkMt.pngLCDR Ghyr th'Lar, Chief Tactical Officer

Lt. Commander th'Lar has served in military contexts his entire life, both in the Andorian Imperial Guard and later Starfleet. Having made a name for himself in writing custom targeting and firing subroutines as a hobby, Ghyr th'Lar is also a talented marksman and survivalist. His expertise both on the ground and in space have made him a natural candidate as tactical officer, and so the Captain is rarely seen without Ghyr nearby on away missions. Ghyr th'Lar is mated and has at least one child, though he has not had contact with his family in many years. The lure of advanture in space is simply too great for the aging Andorian. If he is to meet his end, he will meet it in battle.
fZnnwjX.pngLCDR James Barrett, Chief of Operations & Security

Lt. Commander Barrett has enjoyed a quick rise through Starfleet, much thanks to his rare talent to directly motivate those around him by example. His work ethic and easygoing nature are often considered an inspiration to subordinate and superior alike. His ability to coordinate multiple shift schedules, navigate crew conflicts, and ensure work deadlines are met consistently is invaluable to the daily operation of the ship. It is these tireless efforts that have more than earned him the position as Chief of Security, along with a posting on the bridge at Ops. Despite these qualities, Lt. Commander Barrett is somewhat notorious for encouraging and enabling the very aggressive COB. When positive motivation fails, punishment must follow.
8sCzm5C.pngLCDR Dr. Soima Nell, Chief Medical Officer, Third Officer

Dr Soima Nell is a joined Trill and graduate of the Johns Hopkins University on Earth. Soima, the current host, is a graduate of Starfleet Medical School and served as a physician on multiple Federation Colonies for much of her life. The symbiote, Nell, has been hosted by more medical professionals than she cares to admit. With an amassed medical knowledge of more than two hundred years between them, Soima Nell has both the expertise and temperament to easily serve as CMO aboard a Federation vessel. While her medical talents are outstanding, equally impressive is her calming demeanor and ability to understand and address psychological or interpersonal concerns by those who report to her sickbay. For this reason, she serves somewhat unofficially as the ship's counselor. As one of her previous hosts had command experience, she also serves as the ship's Third Officer.
TAYfsWn.pngLT Riha Brogg, Helmsman, Navigator

Lieutenant Brogg is a young Bolian woman eager to prove herself. Ambitious and optimistic, she was passed over multiple times on other ships before her transfer to the USS Freeman where she met Captain Locke and Commander Andersson. Her loud personality, while considered somewhat irritating by the senior officers, was nonetheless endearing and taken as a good sign of future growth. Captain Locke felt she could do with a more challenging environment and closer supervision, and her outstanding pilot scores at the Academy made her a natural candidate for Helmsman. Placing her there, directly under his watchful eye, Lt. Brogg now serves with pride as one of the finest helmsmen available. Incidentally, the increased challenge of assignment has tempered her energy somewhat, making her easier to tolerate.
IwtKlZD.pngSCPO Dara Setka, Chief of the Boat (COB)

Senior Chief Petty Officer Setka is the highest ranked enlisted crewman aboard the Adamant. Dara Setka was just a young girl at the time of the Dominion War and the fall of the Cardassian Union, one of countless living between bouts of poverty and plenty. Her experiences during the war taught her many good and bad qualities alike, including her wholehearted belief that her people should have joined with Starfleet. Following this belief, she herself enlisted as soon as she was old enough. Her aggressive and combative personality held her back in the Academy, leading her to graduate into the rank of Crewman instead of Ensign. From there she has doggedly rose through the ranks, stepping on the backs of those who get in her way if she must. Despite this, her loyalty to Starfleet and (most of) the values it represents is unquestionable and unwavering. As Chief of the Boat, Dara Setka runs a tight crew and enforces it with harsh and immediate discipline. While the crew respect the officers, they fear the Chief.
