THE LEGACY CLASS
The Legacy-class cruisers were a class of Starfleet Assault Cruisers, designed to be an improvement on the Imperial-class. The original run of the class was supposed to be 12 ships, but the latter seven were suspended as the material and labour required to complete them was seen as prohibitively costly and were shifted to higher-priority escort vessels and more proven ship designs to counter the Klingon threat.
DESIGN
At the end of the 24th Century, Starfleet Command was considering the next generation of starship to follow the Sovereign-class cruisers. The Offices of Starship Development (OSD) was given instructions to prepare designs for a new starship. The design should: "take the armament, armour and engine power of the Sovereign as the standard and build around them a hull which should allow as much physical protection as possible without sacrificing manoeuvrability.” Of the many designs that were presented to Command, the Imperial design was the one that was selected. In 2402, U.S.S. Imperial was launched. The ship's manoeuvrability was compromised more than many captains liked and each ship was incredibly expensive, pushing the boundaries of being prohibitive. However, these problems were mitigated in combat, the extra armour proving to be a more than equal trade-off for the lack of agility, and with many Imperial-class ships being retro-fitted with RCS Accelerators, the trade-off was lessened by a significant margin.
The success of the Imperial-class notwithstanding, it was still a very expensive ship to construct and maintain. The OSD was given new orders, this time to make was was in essence, a cost-effective variant of the Imperial class. On July 30th 2404, designs for the Legacy-class were submitted; a ship designed to be more cost-effective than the Imperial-class without having to forgo the extra protection. The OSD had been able to reduce the mass in comparison to the Imperial-class by 23%, and increased the overall length to 790 meters. The armaments remained the same, however, except with the addition of several point-defence turrets. The prototype U.S.S. Legacy, (NX-98000, later NCC-93333) was launched in November 2406 from Utopia Planitia space dock to conduct her first space trials.

During her space trials, a number of issues came to light. Most notably being the swept back pylons and oversized nacelles threw off the ship's centre off mass, making the manoeuvring thrusters and impulse drives work harder and consume more power than was thought to be acceptable. Starfleet Command asked the OSD to rework the design of the Legacy-class by reducing the length of the secondary hull by 60 meters, but this was deemed unsatisfactory as it compromised the available space on board. the OSD team in charge of the Legacy class toyed around for several days, moving various ship modules around in holographic simulations to try and bring the centre of mass back to its intended position, when a young engineering offer inverted the pylons so they swept forwards instead of back. It was not a perfect fix, but it did most of the work.
After her refit, and following her second and third successful space trials, the U.S.S. Legacy was commissioned as NCC-93333 in December 2407, and the next four ships of the class were ordered, the first of which (U.S.S. Gilgamesh) was laid down four weeks later.
SHIPS
While solid and somewhat cheaper than the Imperial-class, the Legacy-class did not prove to cut a significant enough margin in cost between it and the Imperial. After the first three ships were completed, it was also found that the role the class had been conceived for, (designed with the same school of thought the Fast Battleships from Earth's 20th century; outfight anything it cannot outrun and outrun anything it cannot outfight.) was far too niche to warrant a continuation of the Legacy and so production was halted after the completion of the final two ships, bringing the total number of Legacy-class assault cruisers up to five. However, recently it has been speculated that it may have been lack of commanding officers with pertinent mindsets or training to get the best out of the Legacy-class that saw its discontinuation.
