ORIGINS OF A NAME

ORDER OF THE TEMPLE OF SOLOMON
The Order of the Temple of Solomon, more commonly referred to as the Knights Templar was an order of Christian knights, elite warriors from Earth's ancient history. Founded in 1119 CE, the Knights Templar, or simply Templars, were a military order that waged war against the Saracens during a series of religious wars referred to as The Crusades in the modern-day State of Jerusalem. The Order of the Temple of Solomon took a series of oaths that included personal poverty, chastity, and fealty to the Church.

The order was originally founded to protect travellers along the Pilgrim's Road to the city of Jerusalem. Their fortresses that dotted the road were famous for their bright white walls. When in battle, the Knights Templar fought so fiercely and with such vehemence, it was said that a single knight could scare away a horde of a thousand men, and two could see off ten thousand. At their peak, the Order boasted nearly 20,000 warriors.

After the ancient Islamic peoples seized and maintained control of the State of Jerusalem, the military mission for the Knights Templar became less important. However, the Order had not been sole concerned with war in the near 200 years since their creation; they had become astute bankers, property owners, and business managers and were very much a part of every day life. However, King Philip IV of France, who owed the Templars a very large debt, conspired with Pope Clement V to remove the Knights Templar from power. On Friday 13th October, 1307, the Grand Master of the Order and all Templars in France were arrested, charged with heresy (an archaic crime, relating to disobeying the laws of a church) and tortured into confessing. After 7 years of torture and imprisonment, the Templars were executed and what remained of the Order, along with their vast fortune, vanished into myth.

HISTORY OF A NAME

The first ship to bear the name Knight Templar was launched in 2243. With the registry of NCC-1274, she was one of the last Walker-class starships to be built. Like most Starfleet vessels during this era, her primary purpose was exploration, though she was also tasked with numerous escort missions and transporting various dignitaries, ambassadors and diplomats. After the Battle of the Binary Stars, she was assigned to front line duty, engaging in multiple skirmishes with the Klingons until she was destroyed in August 2256.

The second ship chosen to bear the name Knight Templar was selected out of either some kind of irony or an ill-advised attempt to show the concept of unity. Saladin, for whom the Saladin class was named, fought against the Knights Templar during the religious wars referred to as the Crusades, and beat them on several occasions. However, it seems that even more than a thousand years after their conflict, the Knights Templar were still at war with Saladin; the Knight Templar-A was incredibly accident prone, suffering from repeated system failures from unknown causes. Fortunately, as a destroyer, her area of operations were contained almost entirely withing the interior of the Federation, and therefore she was never far from a starbase or shipyard. After a ship-wise failure of all systems in 2280, she spent 8 months docked while engineers and system specialists went through her systems one by one to try and determine the cause of her continued faults. After an extensive search, nothing conclusive was found. She spent the remainder of the year being refitted with a new computer core and warp dive in the hopes that this would resolve the problems. Sadly, it did not, and in 2287 it was decided that she was more trouble than she was worth. She was decommissioned and sent to the ship-breaker yards.
