Initially formed at the end of the Federation-Cardassian War, the 101st was one of the first main stream squadrons to switch from fast attack shuttles to the newer Peregrine Fighter. Seeing extensive combat in the Dominion War, the squadron suffered large losses due to extensive deployments, which saw its leadership change hands several times.

VFA-101 has extensive service in the task of "convoy escort", normally serving on Akira or Armitage Class starships. The squadron has fought in numerous engagements throughout its history, most notably against the Jem'hadar, and to a lesser extent The Borg.

Currently the squadron has been attached to the USS Midway, under the command of Commander Jacob Riley.
