MISSION OBJECTIVES

Pursuant to Starfleet Exploration Directives 902.3 & 914.5, Starfleet Defense Directives 138.6, 141.1. 154.7 and 238.3, and Federation Security Council General Policy, the following objectives have been established for an Avenger class Starship:
  • Replace Heavy Cruiser, re-commissioned Excelsior and Defiant classes and variant Starships as a primary instrument of Federation deep-space defense.
  • Provide a mobile platform for a wide range of ongoing scientific and cultural research projects.
  • Provide autonomous capability for full execution of Federation defensive, interdictive, cultural, scientific, and explorative policy in deep space or border territory.
  • Serve as a frontline assault vehicle during times of war and emergencies.
  • Provide a mobile platform for testing and implementation of mission-specific, adaptive, iterative or new technology.

Avenger class vessels are part of the generational tradition initialised by the Akira and Defiant classes that smaller, faster, more maneuverable Starships are needed to better serve Starfleet's, and, by extension, the Federation's needs. Considering the design requirements of range, flexibility and durability, the Avenger provides a much admired return to the classic Constitution silhouette albeit in a heavier and more compact form.

Initial prototyping of the Avenger class took place at the ASDB tertiary facilities at Utopia Planitia, Mars.

Unlike many larger starships of current developmental attitudes, with saucer separation as a prerequisite, Avenger class vessels have no provision for MVA separation. As a result, the Avenger class no longer has the truly distinct twin hull design that has been seen in many of active service cruiser marques. This means that the primary hull and the engineering hull are integrated in similar fashion to the Intrepid class, with a heavier twin hulled "neck" section. This allows the Avenger class to make a smoother, less polluted entry into subspace during Warp, as per Starfleet Directive 12856.A.

The upper mission pod is modular and can be refitted with a large array of optional configurations in a similar fashion to the Nebula class. In fact, the design of the interlock is specifically designed to be compatible with currently available Nebula class mission pods. With the Nacelles closer to the main hull, they can be more adequately protected by the primary and secondary shield generators with only a minimal loss in shield efficiency.
