U.S.S. PROVIDENCE REGENT CLASS // STARFLEET REGISTRY NCC-97315 |
Based upon the Sovereign-class hull design, the Regent-class assault cruiser was developed in response to the need for a more durable cruiser capable of presenting a lower ship profile in battle. With a draft nearly ten meters shorter than that of its parent ship and sporting newly developed advanced deflector shields, this Sovereign variant was Starfleet's solution solution to this demand. Upon successful field tests from the Regent Class Development Project, several ships of the class were ordered by Starfleet to assist in long range exploration missions and front-line postings.
The U.S.S. Providence (NCC-97315) is the fifth Regent-class ship to be ordered by Starfleet. Laid down in the San Francisco Fleet Yards in 2408, the ship was launched and commissioned in 2410. The ship's name is derived from the city of Providence, Rhode Island, Earth, and its meaning implies a "timely preparation for future eventualities." Additionally, several historical sea-faring vessels of Earth bore the same name and prefix as the Starfleet vessel. The first of these vessels was the USS Providence, a sloop-of-war that saw service in the American War for Independence from 1775-1779. Its second namesake was the USS Providence (CL-82), a Cleveland-class light cruiser in the United States Navy from 1945-1973 that saw service at both the tail end of the Second World War and the Vietnam War. Its third and final namesake was the USS Providence (SSN-719), a Los Angeles-class submarine in the United States Navy during the 20th and 21st centuries. It is from this vessel that the Starfleet ship takes its motto:
Soon after commissioning, the ship was placed under the command of Captain T'Vir, a proud and staunchly conservative Starfleet officer whose tenure in Starfleet includes several military engagements and crisis management situations. In 2416, the Providence was assigned to Deep Space 13 after docking for repairs and resupply following an extended cruise.
