| The U.S.S. Tamerlane is a Defiant-class starship that has a long history of service in Starfleet as both a tactical escort and short-range, low-profile scout ship. Part of Starfleet's crash-building program shortly after the end of the Dominion War, the Tamerlane was named for an old Klingon War era Saladin-class destroyer. Following the Dominion War and continuing through to current deployments, the Tamerlane and her sister Defiant-class vessels have fulfilled roles as both escort ships and as surprisingly successful short-term exploration and scouting vessels in potentially hostile environments. |
