U.S.S. ASIMOV
The USS Asimov (NCC-72455) was launched in 2370 as a medium-range planetary research vessel. A second-line explorer, Asimov embarked on follow-up missions to newly discovered star systems to perform more detailed studies. Most notably, the vessel made a number of trips into the Gamma Quadrant and assisted with the establishment of the ill-fated New Bajor colony.
With the onset of war, Asimov was withdrawn from the region, and reassigned to the Beta Quadrant where it would continue its scientific missions until the 2390s, when it returned to Utopia Planitia for a systems overhaul. During this time, Asimov was briefly considered a candidate for the refit that would become the Rhode Island Class, but ultimately it was not chosen.
After returning to service, Asimov was used in a more varied scientific role, alternating between planetary research, study of gaseous anomalies, and even a few longer-range sector charting missions. In 2413, Asimov was reassigned to the Delta Quadrant, where it assisted with the newly-possible exploration of that quadrant. It would remain on that assignment until the recall of forces at the start of the Iconian War.
Asimov spent most of the war functioning as a scout vessel for the Third Fleet. Repair of impulse engine damage sustained during the final battle of the war kept Asimov in drydock for over a month. Most of the vessel’s crew was transferred away during this time. When repairs were completed, Asimov was reassigned to the 38th Fleet, attached to the command of Deep Space 13.
Being attached to the command of Deep Space 13, Asimov maintains a minimum crew of 30 onboard at all times. When assigned to a mission, or launched in defense of the station, the remaining crew, including the ship’s senior staff, are assigned from the crew of the Starbase, filling the complement up to approximately 80.
