Seventh off the production line of block 2 Lafayette class recon destroyers, a further refinement of the brand-new iteration of the legendary New Orleans class destroyer, made famous during the Cardassian conflict and the Dominion Wars. The Baton Rouge takes its namesake off both the city in Louisiana, Earth, and for the legacy of the Baton Rouge class cruiser which once served as the mainstay of Starfleet until the advent of the Constitution class vessels.

The designers of the Lafayette class envisioned a tough and fast light destroyer design that would sacrifice the nimbleness of an escort vessel in exchange for longer range and a strong sensor suite that could rival capital vessels. The purpose of the Lafayette class is to act as a reconnaissance platform and a patrol ship with longer legs than her escort counterparts, while at the same time freeing up the cruisers that would normally serve in her role. In a fleet role, the Lafayette could act as an 'eye-in-space', taking on the role of AWACS and sensor platform role during a fleet engagement while being strong enough to hold her own in a large engagement.

The Baton Rouge was assigned to 38th Fleet, Task Force Argo, to act in the patrol and recon role.
