The USS Canberra (NCC-65347) is a retrofit Akira class Escort carrier in service with the 38th fleet. She is named for the Australian Kent class cruiser of the same name from the mid 20th century that was sunk defending US troops during the 1943 Battle of Savo Island. She is the first Starfleet vessel to bear the name.

History

Laid down in early 2370 at the New Aberdeen Naval Yards as an Akira class Heavy Escort, the USS Canberra was launched late May 2371. Canberra was originally posted to the Romulan Neutral Zone to help keep an eye on Romulan activities. However, when the Dominion started gearing up in 2372, Canberra was quickly reassigned to Starbase 211 on the Cardassian DMZ. For the duration of the Dominion War, Canberra used her speed and manoeuvrability to harass Dominion and Cardassian forces. In 2380, Canberra was assigned to the Utopia Planitia Fleetyards to undergo a refit in which she was converted from a Heavy Escort to an escort Carrier. This refit, which took the better part of two years, involved upgrading the ship’s C3 (Command, Control, and Communications) systems to allow for the control of a fighter wing. The refit also involved the installation of a Type II Pulse Phaser Point Defense System.

In 2382, when the refit was completed, Canberra was redeployed back to the Romulan Neutral Zone to assist Admiral Picard’s evacuation effort. However, when the Synth attack on Mars happened in 2385, Canberra was detached from the now cancelled evacuation effort and moved to the Federation-Klingon border. For the next quarter century and a bit, until 2409, Canberra was involved in bith anti-piracy operations as well as the Federation Klingon war.

At the close of the War, Canberra was sent back to Sol for repair and resupply, from where she was then deployed to Deep Space 9, to assist in operations there against the Obsidian Order. When the Dominion started getting uppity in 2411, Canberra was one of the vessels assigned to defend DS9. She was also involved in the retaking of DS9 after it was captured by a temporally displaced Dominion force.

In early 2412, Canberra was hurriedly assigned to an anti-Borg task force to assist in halting a small Borg incursion in the Beta Quadrant. Once that was dealt with, Canberra was sent back to the Alpha Quadrant to try and deal with a small group of Breen.

When the Jenolan Dyson Sphere was opened, and the Delta Quadrant was opened up for exploration, Canberra was attached to the Delta Command and assigned to the Kobali front. For the duration of her stay in the Delta Quadrant, Canberra assited in operations against the Vaadwaur, assisting the Kobali. Once the Vaadwaur were defeated, Canberra was reassigned back into Federation space, this time on general patrol and anti-piracy duties. When the Iconian War broke out, Canberra was involved in harrassing actions against Iconian forces, similar to what she did during the Dominion War. After the War, Canberra was assigned back to general patrol and anti-piracy duties.

She was stationed in this position for the next 10 years, up until the Terran Incursion in 2421. Canberra was involved in the defense and evacuation of Jupiter Station and Sol in May 2422. After the miraculous victory of Alliance Forces over the Terrans, Canberra was assigned back to Spacedock for a period of repair and resupply, before being assigned to the 38th Fleet in the Aldebaran sector.

Technical Data

Physical Arrangement & Crew Support

The Akira class of vessel is unique among Starfleet vessels. It was designed in the wake of the Battle of Wolf 359 as a part of the effort to modernise the fleet. It was also designed specifically as a warship, even if Starfleet will not admit that it is such. Its integrated saucer and engineering hull design is unique to only five ship classes, all five of which are geared towards combat. The Akira’s twin pontoon arms that connect to the weapons pod and warp nacelles give the ship a unique silhouette. The bridge, unlike most Stargleet vessels is located on deck 4, and is protected by the twin boom arms.

Tactical & Defensive Systems

The Akira’s tactical systems are formidable. The class has the most torpedo launchers of any class - 17 launchers, to be precise. These are either Mk 80 Direct Fire Photon Tubes. As for Phaser systems, the class mounts 3 Type XII Collimated Phasers. However, this loadout changed fairly considerably post 2380, when a class-wide refit added four phaser strips to the weapons pod, in exchange for removing 3 torpedo tubes, and replacing the rest of the tubes with Mk 95 Direct Fire Photon/Quantum tubes.

Akira class vessels also have a small quirk with their torpedo systems; the four tubes mounted on the saucer are mounted perpendicular to the direction of travel, and all of the rear mounted launchers on the pod and two of the forward mounted ones are mounted at angles. This allows the ship to fire in almost any direction, and allow the torpedo to fly farther, as the weapon does not have to expend fuel manoeuvring.

Defensively, an Akira is about as good as its offensive capabilities. She mounts an FSQ-7 Primary Shield and Deflector Control System which provides full 360 degree protection from almost anything. The shield array is a regenerative array, which allows it to, as the name suggests, regenerate its strength when outside of combat. If something manages to breach the shield, after the 2380 refit, the class mounts a layer of duranium ablative armour over the hull.

Aside from these two passive defensive measures, retrofit Akira carriers also mount a Type II Pulse Phaser Point Defense System. This is a series of turrets located around the hull of the ship that actively intercept incoming torpedoes. The system is based off of the Type XII Pulse Phaser system first mounted on the USS Defiant.

Propulsion

Akira class vessels are powered by a singular RamJet Mk. 1 Matter/Antimatter Reaction Assembly rated at 1500+ Cochranes of power. When connected to the classes pair of Nu class Mod 3 Dilithium Energized Eco-Linear Warp nacelles, the system has enoigh oomph to propel the ship to a maximum speed of Warp 9.8 for a maximum of 12 hours, before the drive has to be shut down for maintenance.

When the Khitomer Alliance opened its Transwarp network, the Canberra underwent a minor refit to install a singular TF-5-U Transwarp Coil, to enable the vessel to use the Network.

Sublight propulsion is provided by a pair of Vervyn TK-42 Combat Subatomic Unified Impulse Engines and a pair of Slepnir 55-KL Subatomic Unified Impulse Engines. The Vervyn engines are mounted on the aft rim of the saucer section, while the Slepnir engines are mounted on the aft end of the pontoons. These engines, combined with the ship’s unique design, provide the ship with an unusually high level of manoeuvrability for a ship of its type and tonnage.

C3 (Command, Control, & Communications) Systems

Akira class escort carriers have an increased level of C3 capabilities when compared to a standard Akira class Heavy Escort, for obvious reasons. As standard, all Akira class vessels mount a singular pod mounted HSCS-1SA Active Omni-Directional Sensor Array, five Sierra 1a8 Multi-Band Linear Sensor Suites, and six Omniwave Passive Sensor Matrices. Retrofit Akira carriers also mount a singular AN/A-27C WATCHER Air Traffic Control Array on the underside of the weapons pod, in place of the three torpedo tubes that were there originally.

In terms of computer systems, the Akira line was originally equipped with an M-14 Isolinear II computer core. This was upgraded in 2380 to be a M-16 Bio-Neural Gel Pack Isolinear III computer core, bringing the core in line with those aboard Sovereign and Intrepid class vessels.

Auxiliary Craft

As standard, an Akira retrofit carrier can carry up to 11 shuttles, of Types 8, 9, and 11, as well as 3 Danube or Yellowstone class runabouts, 6 CMU Workbees, and either 10 Peregrine class fighters or 20 Valkyrie class strike fighters. This complement can of course be modified on a per mission basis, depending on what the Captian or CAG requires, but that rarely happens. On Canberra, the complement is organised into the 29th Tactical Fighter Wing.

29th Tactical Fighter Wing

Formed during the Dominion War, the 29th Tactical Fighter Wing is currently stationed aboard the USS Canberra. The wing’s original mission was to provide air support for ground troops. While it is still able to complete that mission, however, it is no longer the wing’s primary mission. Now, the wing’s primary mission is to provide fleet defence from escort carriers, in this case, the Canberra.

Currently, the Wing is comprised of 2 squadrons of 10 Valkyrie class strike fighters each, VFA-99, and VFA-52, as well as a support element. This support elemnt consists of 5 Type 8 shuttles and 4 Type 9 shuttles in the light/medium transport role, 2 Type 20 shuttles in the assault role, 6 CMU workbees and 3 Danube class runabouts. These runabouts are the USS Hawkesbury and Murrumbidgee in the tactical role and the USS Goulburn in the heavy transport role.
