The USS Forrestal (NCC-98417) is a Monitor class Fleet Carrier in service with Starfleet’s 38th Fleet.

History

Technical Data

Physical Arrangement & Crew Support

Officially designated as a Block II Sutherland class vessel, the Monitor class Fleet Carrier is a product of the Century Cruiser Project. As such, the design shares many elements with ships such as the Galaxy derived Cygnus, Andromeda, and Yamato designs as well as ships like the Lafayette and New Orleans classes.

Tactical & Defensive Systems

As the Monitor is based on the frame of a Sutherland class Advanced Research Vessel, Monitor class carriers aren’t particularly strong in the offense department. Monitors mount three Type XII Phaser Arrays on the dorsal side of the saucer, one on the ventral side, one on the ventral side of the engineering hull, and four on the nacelle pylons. As for torpedo systems, a standard Monitor hull, without the hangar pod, mounts two Mk. 115 Direct Fire Photon/Quantum Torpedo launchers, one fore, one aft. The Hangar Pod adds four more launchers, two each fore and aft. To make up for this relative lack of weapons, the majority of a Monitor’s striking power comes from its Carrier Air Wing.

Defensively, a Monitor is relatively strong in comparison to its offensive weapons. The class mounts a trio of Yoyodyne 960-A Unified Field Emitter Deflectors which provide full 360 degree protection from almost anything. The shield array is a Regenerative, metaphasic, multi-spectrum shield array. It also has an inbuilt Nexus Defence Screen to protect the crew from the Nexus and other similar phenomena. Alongside the shield array, Monitor class vessels mount Neutronium alloy ablative armour.

Aside from these two passive defensive measures, Monitor class fleet carriers also mount 5 co-located Type II Pulse Phaser Point Defense Systems and Mk 10 Torpedo Point Defense Systems at various locations around the hull. These provide direct Close In defense against hostile fighters and torpedoes.

Propulsion

As most, if not all vessels from the Century Cruiser Project have a high parts commonality, Monitor class carriers use propulsion systems that are some of the most common throughout the fleet. Main power is provided from a single Yoyodyne 47A Matter/Anti-matter Reaction Chamber Warp Core. To generate a warp field, power from the reactor is channeled into a pair of Cochrane Type 11K8 Eco-Linear Warp Drive Units. Monitors also carry a singular Ithra IT-6 Transwarp Coil to allow for access to the Khitomer Alliance’s Transwarp Network, as well as a Rigel Labs X06-A Quantum Slipstream Field Projector.

Sublight propulsion is provided by a pair of HeliosCorp G90 Hyper Subatomic Unified Energy Impulse Drive Units and a pair of Inline Flux Mk45 Subatomic Unified Energy Impulse Drive Units. The HeliosCorp engines are mounted on the aft rim of the saucer section, while the Inline engines are mounted on underneath saucer on either side of the mission pod pylon.

C3 (Command, Control, & Communications) Systems

As a Carrier, Monitor class vessels have some of the best C3 systems in Starfleet. As with standard Sutherland class vessels, Monitors mount 10 DYN-75 Multi-Band Linear Sensor suites, 5 Omni-Directional Passive Sensor Matrices, and two Multidifferential-multispectral (MDMS) Passive Sensor Vanes. However, as a Carrier, Monitor also mount a pair of AN/A-27C WATCHER Air Traffic Control Arrays on the Mission Pod.

Flight Ops are are controlled from Primary Flight Control on top of the Hangar Pod. “Tower”, “Approach”, and “Area” control are all done from here. As a Fleet Carrier, Monitors have the ability to control not just their own craft in a battlespace but also other ships’ fighters.

Auxiliary Craft

Aboard the USS Forrestal, the ship’s air wing is designated as CVW-10. It is split up into eight separate squadrons, four of which are strike fighter squadrons (VFA-35, 111, 133, and 255), one Electronic Warfare squadron (VAQ-100), one Airborne Early Warning and Control squadron (VAW-98), one Heavy Fleet Logistics squadron (VRC-42), and one Light Fleet Logistics squadron (HSC-55). These squadrons are based at DS13 when not embarked aboard the Forrestal. VFA-35, 111, and 133 are all equipped with twelve Valkyrie class Strike Fighters each, while VFA-255 is equipped with twelve Valor class Heavy Strike Fighters, for a total of 48 Strike Fighters. VAQ-100 is equipped with twelve Peregrine class Fighters modified for the Suppression/Destruction of Enemy Space Defenses (S/DESD). VAW-98 is equipped with three Danube class Runabouts, modified for the Airborne Early Warning and Control role. Currently, only one of these runabouts, the Monash, is embarked aboard Forrestal, while the other two are aboard DS13 as backup craft. Finally, VRC-42 is equipped with two Danube class runabouts, the Patton and the Devraux and two Type-20 Argo class shuttles, while HSC-55 is equipped with 15 Type -8, -9 shuttles and two CMU Workbees.

During wartime, or in extreme circumstances, Forrestal can embark three additional fighter squadrons that the remaining two AEW&C Danubes as a “surge capacity”. The three additional squadrons are VFA-106, -39, and -111 - the “Gladiators”, “Spartans”, and “Nighthawks” respectively. All three of these squadrons fly Valkyrie class strike fighters, with the exception of VFA-106, who flies both Valkyries and Valor class fighters.
