Commissioned in 2375 at the very end of the Dominion War, the USS Inexpugnable was one of the first in the second generation of Sovereign-class Battleships employed by Starfleet. Built with several notable improvements in armament, combat capability, and firepower, the Inexpugnable was immediately pressed into service during the final months of the Dominion War. The vessel has a reputation for being remarkably tough, and has earned the nickname of "Inexy" by her crew.
DOMINION WAR SERVICE
A testbed of several new technologies and abilities, the Inexpugnable saw only limited service in the Dominion war, with Starfleet being very hesitant to risk the new vessel in heavy combat scenarios. In addition, problems with the spaceframe resulted in the vessel being forced to return to drydock on several occassions.
Despite these circumstances, the Inexpugnable was able to make it to the Battle of Cardassia, where the vessel proved remarkably destructive in combat against the Breen. While the Inexpugnable's Dominion War service wasn't as pronounced as it could have been, the vessel proved to be a vision of things for Starfleet.
POST DOMINION WAR
Following the conclusion of the war, the Inexpugnable would be attached to the Fifth Fleet, continuing to serve as one of Starfleet's heavy weights in police actions. Due to its high profile, the vessel was typically kept in reserve near the Federation core worlds. As such, the vessel began to gain a reputation as a "hangar queen". With tensions across the Quadrant gradually beginning to die down, some began to question if the large and imposing vessel had been a waste of resources.
KLINGON WAR
Unfortunantely, the Inexpugnable would receive an opportunity to do what it was designed to do and prove itself as a combat capable warship. As tensions began to mount between the Klingon Empire and the Federation, the Inexpugnable would be reassigned to the Archanis Sector along the Klingon border as a clear show of force in spite of Klingon demands.
As war between the two powers broke out, the Inexpugnable was appointed as the flagship of Task Force Typhoon, a detachment of the Fifth Fleet under Commodore Carmen Saldana. While eventually being forced to retreat from Archanis, Task Force Typhoon inflicted heavy casualties against the Imperial Fleet.
As the war continued to rage, the Inexpugnable would gain little respite, with Task Force Typhoon taking part in numerous offensive and defensive campaigns near Klingon Space, most notably, the destruction of a heavily defended Klingon Starbase, earning a reputation among both Starfleet and the Klingon Defense Force as a vessel not to be underestimated.
In 2409, however, the Inexpugnable would be replaced as a flagship of Task Force Typhoon by the mighty Odyssey-class, being re-designated from the moniker of battleship to heavy cruiser. No longer the forefront of Starfleet innovation, the Sovereign-class was reassigned to Captain Francessca Charon.
THE ROMULAN CAMPAIGN
In 2410, the Inexpugnable would be reassigned from the Klingon Front to Starbase 39-Sierra, tasked with responding to hostile Romulan activity and deterring rogue Star Empire elements. The Inexpugnable would serve valiantly at the Battle of Vulcan, where it faced down two D'Deridex Warbirds in a brawl and managed to come out on top, earning Captain Charon a considerable amount of prestige.
In 2413, Captain Charon would be promoted to Commodore, and the Inexpugnable was reassigned to an upcoming and relatively young Captain, Tycho Vincet Anderson. Tasked with assisting in the pacification of a string of rogue Star Empire planets within the Rator Sector, Anderson and the Inexpugnable continued to operate out of Sierra until the closing months of 2413. The ship and her captain engaged in many battles against Imperial forces, including a skirmish against a Scimitar-class Dreadnought that resulted in the vessel being heavily damaged. The vessel and her Captain were reassigned following the conditional surrender of the Romulan worlds to the Romulan Republic.
TRUE WAY INSURGENCY
Reassigned to the relatively backwater Deep Space K-27 in the Alpha Quadrant, Anderson and the Inexpugnable would be tasked with the apprehension and countering of True Way insurgents, where it performed remarkably well against the relatively under powered and under equipped Cardassian rebels.
The ship also took part in several expeditions into the Badlands Nebula, where it came into conflict with Terran Imperial forces on several occasions. While the vessel and crew performed quite well against the True Way, they gained little, if any, recognition, and wouldn't be reassigned to more prestiegous assignments until the onset of the Iconian War.
ICONIAN CONFLICT
Above all other conflicts the Inexy had faced in her history, there are none that defined her more than the Iconian War. With Herald forces blitzing across the Galaxy, the Inexpugnable would once again find herself reassigned to pressing frontline duty. As the war dragged on and casualties began to mount, the Inexpugnable was hastily refitted with the latest Federation weapon systems due to an absence of dedicated new vessels. While armed to the teeth, there was no time to replace the Inexpugnable's dated defensive subsystems and shielding, making her comparably fragile than later model cruisers.
Anderson and the Inexpugnable took part in several of the most notable battles of the Iconian War as part of the Fifth Fleet, including the disastrous assault on the Herald Sphere, and the desperate defense of Earth, where she single handily entered a slugging match with a Vompth-class Battleship and forced the approaching vessel to retreat after sustaining heavy damage, saving a trio of wounded Starfleet frigates in the process. Her actions in the conflict earned her Captain the Starfleet Citation for Conspicuous Gallantry, and the crew a Starfleet Unit Citation following the war's end.
DRYDOCK TIME AND MODERN SERVICE
Heavily damaged at the war's end, the Inexpugnable spent much of the next year in drydock, eventually being pressed back into service with the Fifth Fleet under Anderson, where the ship and her crew saw limited action against the Tzenkethi Coalition and other threats to galactic stability in the months and years that followed.
Anderson and the Inexpugnable have recently been reassigned to the 38th Fleet, where the venerable assault cruiser's life shows no signs of ending soon.
