The USS Leyte Gulf is a Defiant-class tactical escort build in the early 2400s and comissioned in 2411, and boasts the most advanced systems capable of being carried by a ship of its size. These include modern incarnation of phaser cannons, fore and aft Quantum Torpedo launchers and a cloaking device, only to be used in wartime or when there's an extreme need for the welfare of ship and crew.
These systems with the inclusion of a highly experienced command staff and crew has allowed the vessel to excel in combat situations, despite numerous close calls towards the vessel's destruction. A combination of a high capacity shield grid and ablative armor has helped the ship survive what have would otherwise been devastating hits.
