Description
The U.S.S. O'Brien, named for famed Starfleet Engineer Miles Edward O'Brien, is a Galaxy-class vessel developed in response to the ongoing need for mobilization of the Starfleet Corps of Engineers to areas deemed either too difficult, costly, or risky to deploy a multi-ship engineering fleet.
Though Galaxy-class by design, the vessel has done away with most of the crew amenities and quarters to re-utilize the space in the saucer for large scale industrial equipment normally only found at drydock and starbase facilities. This has allowed the O'Brien to manage large scale engineering projects in the field and streamline operations of the Corps of Engineers for starbase and colony world support. The ship's bridge, called “Ops” by her crew, houses standard vessel command and control surfaces along with dedicated stations for Engineering, flight deck operations, and sensor data processing. In addition, Ops sports a Holo-design table allowing the engineering team to alter designs in real time ahead of fabrication by the ship's suite of industrial replicators.
The O'Brien's saucer sports an extended shuttle bay containing 42 workbees, four Danube class runabouts, and a multiple drop-pods for the small army of planet-based construction equipment carried on board.
Armaments are slightly less than standard Galaxy class vessels with the ventral phaser array on the saucer replaced with seven high-precision tractor beam emitters, this has created a blind-spot situation on the saucer section when operating independently of the Stardrive and caught in a combat situation.
Further separating her from the standard for a Starfleet vessel, the O'Brien houses a team of “Divers” who's duties include EV salvage, repair, or construction operations.

Mission Profile
The U.S.S. O'Brien is generally deployed to support construction, repair, refit, or salvaging of in-field assets or planet-based colonial habitats. When deployed with a fleet, the O'Brien serves as an in-field repair facility for starships up to Excelsior class in size, though her scope for handling any vessel larger than that is limited. While a more than capable repair and construction ship, the O'Brien cannot compare to the facilities offered at a Starbase.
Under standard operations, the ship will split to allow the Saucer section to carry out its normal mission while under combat support from the Stardrive section.
