U.S.S. OPPORTUNITY
Launched and commissioned in 2363, the USS Opportunity NCC-70837 is part of the original batch of Galaxy Class starships constructed by the United Federation of planets. Much of her assignments included long range exploration and first contact duty, meaning that the ship spent the the majority of her time far beyond Federation space, however, the Opportunity was also part of an experiment in maintaining crew morale and cohesion on long space voyages, and as such was fitted with many more luxurious internal fittings than many of her already extremely well appointed class. Such features included a full sized olympic swimming pool, more sophisticated holodecks and uprated crew accommodations amongst many other features intended to better stave off the effects of travelling for years and, as per the Galaxy Classâ design, potentially decades at a time in deep space with minimal returns to port.
These more peaceful duties were interrupted by the outbreak of hostilities with the Dominion. The USS Opportunity was hastily refitted for more combat orientated duties, receiving upgrades to her shields, additional phaser arrays, and additional ablative armour similar to the other vessels that ended up forming the âGalaxy Wingâ during the Dominion War.
Having sustained heavy damage during the conflict, the USS Opportunity was relegated to duties such as anti piracy operations within Federation and allied space as well as border patrol following the cessation of hostilities. The Federation deeming it unsuitable to use a vessel covered in such obvious âbattle scarsâ to represent it on long range exploratory tasks and first contact missions should it give a bad âfirst impressionâ, as well as uneconomical to restore to pristine condition when newer Sovereign Class vessels were already available to take over much of the work she would have done previously with greater efficiency and speed.
The USS Opportunity was relegated to mothballs in 2408 and was initially destined to be scrapped before the outbreak of the Iconian war, resulting in her being retained for either reactivation or to be used as a source of spare parts, although she was used for neither of these and remained borderline forgotten in reserve until 2423, where as part of an evaluation for a potential life extension program or at the very least a viability test for the now venerable Galaxy platform, the Opportunity was finally reactivated and assigned to the 38th fleet. The years and rough workhorse treatment had not been kind to the ship however, and despite the impressively fast restoration of her primary systems spearheaded and in some cases completed personally by the newly promoted Captain Carter to get the Opportunity ready for active duty again the ship remains very much a âprojectâ in the words of her commanding officer.
