USS Reyga - Captain's Log

CAPTAIN'S LOG Stardate 101158.1

Reyga’s been tasked with transporting a team of scientists to something called the Archive. More properly, the Eternal Gallery and Archive. I admit, I had to look this one up.

Apparently, it’s a sort of library, archiving knowledge, culture, and artifacts from all over the galaxy. It’s not exactly the Tycho City Public Library, though. Seems they’re more interested in long-term preservation than public education.

Physically, it’s a station that changes locations periodically, often to … inhospitable environments. Currently, it’s in the Rheic System, inside an ice giant.

The Daystrom team will need a couple days on the station, and we’ll have to remain docked for that duration. The crew will be allowed to visit the archive while we’re there, which may very well be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

We had to ram our way through an ice crust to do it, but we reached the archive. Reyga suffered some minor damage in the descent, but nothing we can’t repair on our own before departing. Bright side, we put together a calibrations package that should make future visits much easier, for as long as the station remains where it is.

I’ve extended shore leave for anyone who wants to take it. The response has been mixed - some, Katriel included, were really excited to take advantage of it. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that the more scientifically inclined members of the crew are more interested in visiting a library than others. The number of takers were less than I expected overall, though. I overheard at least one junior officer commenting that they just didn’t “get it.”

Personally, I took a handful of short trips to different sections that seemed interesting. It was definitely an experience, just being there, seeing the scope of it. I think I might have gotten more out of it if I’d gone in with something in particular that I wanted to learn about, though. There’s just such a huge variety.

Not to mention, their standards about what constitutes items with “cultural value” seem to vary wildly. The Xindus exhibit was incredible, and quite possibly unique in the universe. But I also passed a few displays that gave me a laugh. Some really mundane things: a beginners cookbook of Bolian recipes, a collection of Romulan shoulder pads, a complete edition of Bat’leths & BiHnuchs. Not exactly rich with historical significance.

It’s an interesting approach, casting such a wide net. I guess you never know what might be lost to history. Maybe some visitor in a thousand years will be really interested in studying how we learned to cook with acid, or what roleplaying games helped us pass the time.
