The USS Valkyrie entered service as the USS Oneida in 2358, serving as a transport and courier for the Federation for decades. However, the onset of the Klingon war in 2409, and subsequent conflicts in the following years, often saw the Oneida pressed into combat service. It was during one such combat action against the Tzenkethi that the Oneida was disabled in the NCG-8118 system mere hours before the Battle of Bajor.
With the Federation reeling from the devestation at Bajor, the emergence of the Hur'q, and renewed diplomatic contact with the Dominion, the Oneida was left adrift for weeks before a repair and rescue team could be dispatched. It was over the course of these weeks that the Oneida's Captain Ocampo and surviving officers, left with little to do but contemplate their own situation, laid the groundwork for what would become Project Persephone.
Inspired by the nautical tugs of old Earths navies, Project Persephone aimed to deploy specialized starship recovery and repair vessels to fleets throughout the Federation. The Oneida was given a full drydock retrofit, fitted with a secondary warp core within its modular mission pod, heavy duty tractor beam emitters and grappler assemblies, and an expanded hangar bay for a greater compliment of support craft. Rechristened the Valkyrie, the ship would come to be assigned to the 38th Fleet at Deep Space 13, its captain and crew reassigned to oversee Project Persephone from Starbase 1.

| The Valkyrie maintains a crew compliment of 26, composed primarily of engineering crew and officers. Tactical and scientific staff are kept to a minimum, in keeping with the vessels purpose as a dedicated engineering craft. |
