NARRATIVE The Mission started with the involved personal assembling and under going a briefing, on the Bridge of the U.S.S. Defender. During this briefing the Defender started it’s travel towards the station that was the target of the mission.
With the help of Major Valencia, the staff in question where informed of all information we had on the insect species on the station, as well as filling the officers in on what the previous away team had encountered during their time on the station.
During this transit period there was also plans raised and discussed, including beaming the creatures in question over to a secure containment area on the Defender, before moving the creatures to a suitable new habitat, as well as using sonic frequencies previously used, to eliminate the insects if the team was left no choice.
Once the Defender arrived at the station, we found that the station had deployed anti-transporter measures, preventing us from beaming over or beaming out the insects in question, this led to suggestions from Captain Carter around using probes as a signal relay to help breaking through the jamming, however I decided that taking a shuttle over to the station to assess the situation and then use pattern enhancers to extract the insects would be the course of action, whilst Captain Carter remained on the Defender and attempting to see if probes could indeed be used to break through the interference.
Once sensor readings where taken to check for any signs of increased radiation or signals that could be influencing the creatures behavior, as well as readings to check the condition and status of the station to make sure it was safe for an away team, I then asked Captain Nimitz to lead the away team, which would be made up of himself, myself, Commander LaSalle, Major Valencia, Lieutenant Greene and Ensign Ipeia.
Once on the station, the away team found it much like the way the previous team had, with a number of spent egg shells and exoskeletons, following Major Valencia spotting a small number of bugs, an attempt was made to get closer to an area where the insects where gathered, during this attempt the creatures seemed to scatter.
The away team then gathered in the center of the room, just as a large group of insects emerged from vents, doors and cracks in the walls around the room, as the insects charged the team there was an attempt to use a tricorder to emit the frequency that had previously caused the insects to move, however it had little to no effect, and the away team was forced to open fire.
Despite the large numbers, apart from Captain Nimitz losing his prosthetic hand and a few small cuts and scraps the away team escaped without any major injuries, after the brief exchange a dead creature was collected and brought back to the Defender for further study without further incident, as only a small number of insects where taken down during the exchange.
RECOMMENDATION Based on the sudden appearance of the transporter counter measures, when possible a study of the insects intelligence should be conducted.
I also recommend making use of the dead creature on the Defender to gain as much knowledge and information as possible, before we attempt another removal operation. There is much we do not understand about these creatures and this could cause injuries of officers involved in further removal attempts.
I also recommend keeping the Defender in range of the station to monitor the station and insect activity in the mean time, to ensure nothing is missed whilst we study the dead insect on-board. As well as carry on attempts to get transporters working away so it would be possible to beam on and off the station.
I would also recommend sending an xeno-entomologist to help with studies of the insect, as the Defender does not have any such specialists on hand at the moment.
RECOGNITION I would like to recognize the quick thinking of all members of the away team, in helping deal with the sudden hostile behaviour we experienced on the station.
I would also like to recognize the help Major Gabriella Valencia was with both the briefing itself and with helping with the away mission itself.
