LOCATION Abandoned station, Kelt Region, Doza Sector

MISSION Remove bugs from the station.

OUTCOME Bugs not removed. Crystal not removed.

KEY PERSONNEL

  • CAPT, Sh’ow, H.
  • CAPT Tyrstoc
  • CAPT Sh’Ysjana, N.
  • MAJ Valencia, G.

BACKGROUND After the U.S.S. Endeavour located an abandoned station, the U.S.S. Defender was sent to remove the insects from the station. Whilst they failed, an insect was captured and studied, allowing us to remove the insects from the station safely.

NARRATIVE After a briefing, the above travelled down to the station. The main area was secured and the pheromones released successfully. With the insects being drawn to the pheromones, we snuck through the station to arrive at the crystal site.

Like previous encounters, the crystal interfered with electrical devices, including the transporter enhancers that we brought to transport the crystal (the hypothesis being that if the crystal was moved, the insects would follow). With this failing, the Captains opted to “explore” further, against the recommendations of this officer. Captain Tyrstoc’s explorations went further when he touched the crystal, causing him to lose consciousness and the insects, who were previously sedate, to become hostile.

We withdrew safely back to the shuttle, where, once past the scattering field of the station, we were able to transport Captain Tystoc safely. He was revived and is currently in the Defender’s medical bay.

RECOMMENDATION Nothing. Leave the bugs alone. They pose no threat and the crystalline structure the Endeavour found before can be studied instead.

Also make all Starfleet officers go through the “don’t touch unidentified objects” training again.

RECOGNITION Captain H’Ltol led the mission well. Prior to the incident, all Captains worked well with each other.

OOC This is the AAR for the event Seconds out, Round Two. Transcript here. Thanks to @HLtol for GMing; it was great fun!

ADDENDUM The U.S.S. Defender currently remains on station, near the station until further orders are received, to prevent any incursions into the station that may lead to further aggression from the insects or further issues with the crystal.

I agree with the Major’s recommendation about all Starfleet and MACO officers go through the “don’t touch unidentified objects” training again.

I do however accept full responsibility for the incident that lead to the near death of Captain Tyrstoc, with any response that will come. I put together this team, and as such should have kept a closer eye on the Captain to ensure this incident didn’t happen.

ADDENDUM Clear and present signs of intelligent life, as well as advanced knowledge—some of which foreign to present understanding—were observable in and around the area of the crystal mentioned in the relevant reports, and in the reactions of the insectoid lifeforms. Lifeforms which, to my knowledge, have yet to be adequately studied or categorized. These lifeforms, as noted in the aforementioned report(s), appear to pose no present broader danger to any other non-invasive lifeforms and remain entirely contained to the station.

Given these facts, it was my observation—not made lightly—that any interference with this lifeform could possibly constitute a breach of the Prime Directive. As extermination of these lifeforms had been discussed openly, and given my understanding of the worsening tactical situation during the inspection of the crystal site (due to the limited and unknown efficacy of the pheromone countermeasure) as advised by MAJ Valencia, as well as information relayed through psychic assessment provided by CAPT Ysjana, a calculated risk (given stable evacuation conditions outside the immediate vicinity of the crystal, limited scope of reasonably expected harm, and previously hostile actions made against said lifeform by Starfleet) to find any available means of establishing communications was merited and even imperative.

I admit and accept all fault in this decision—which should lay solely with myself for breaching the chain of command on this operation—yet I stand by it in the interest of the advancement of knowledge and preservation of life. Even at the cost of my own.

RECOMMENDATION Warning beacons should be deployed around the station, and the lifeforms within should be more closely and deliberately observed by specialists until such a time as a more accurate determination of their nature, the nature of the crystal, and their relation (if any) can be made.

We are all insignificant lifeforms to something, and it is not ours to make that judgement, nor do I find it conscionable with our sworn oaths as Starfleet officers solely because we are impeded by other life to something we want. If any training should be reiterated, I believe it should be that.
