LOCATION U.S.S. Mariner, Deep Space Thirteen

MISSION Transfer of biomimetic lifeforms from USS Mariner to Deep Space Thirteen.

OUTCOME Secure transfer successful. Early observations already proving fruitful.

NARRATIVE Following a meeting with Captain Tolar to discuss both the findings of our initial studies of the biomimetic lifeforms and my concerns as to the intellect of these beings, we received word that DS13 was ready to receive the two specimens we had obtained.
Transfer went smoothly and without any issue.

Once the Mariner was given the all clear and quarantine procedures were lifted I went to join the station’s science and medical teams to ensure all was well with the new arrivals.

Upon entering the lab I had expected to find either one or both samples inert or to find them in their most recently assumed forms of Nurse Iotaw and the unidentified alien avian species respectively. Instead I entered to find both had now assumed the form of Iotaw. Both showing the same recognition that the original being had with me during past observations.

Upon speaking with Doctor Yont, who had wasted no time in familiarising himself with the specimens. He explained that -while not making any attempts to communicate- the avian being had thrown itself against the force field before collapsing. The two beings then merged, before separating. This time both taking Rigelian form.

After this explanation, Ensign Felenn read a massive spike in oxygen consumption as both beings seemed to display a mixture of avian features along with those of Iotaw. They both promptly reverted to their goo-like forms, with a third being seeming to coalesse.
Once oxygen levels returned to normal the -now three- lifeforms all took the Rigelian form.
They again seemed to be focusing on myself but this time they spoke. Only one word, despite my further engaging the beings. “Doctor.”

This has only strengthened my belief that these beings are indeed able to be communicated with.

Soon after our first attempts at conversation, they reverted to their goo-like state. Throwing themselves at the force field once more. This seems to me to be in frustration after their attempt to further communicate was unsuccessful. The same behaviour I noted during the last round of shipboard observations.

In response to their aggression, the oxygen was cut off. Once more rendering them inert for the time being.

We have learned a lot in a short time. Though as always we now only have more questions.

RECOMMENDATION In light of our new insight into these lifeforms I recommend further study and continued attempts at communicating. These lifeforms are learning. They deserve to be treat with the same dignity and empathy we would grant to any other sentient being.

ADDENDUM This contains a brief report on the activities conducted in Deep Space 13, Science Lab 1 prior to the transportation of cytoplasmic-biomimetic organism(s) from U.S.S. Mariner.

We were initially informed by the station security that the ship had been put under strict quarantine and was not allowed to dock with the station due to undisclosed biohazard. I reported to LCDR R’ysha N’kesh who led the preparation activities and instructed me, due to my operations background, to work on isolation and separation of Lab 1 from the rest of the station. To that end, I focused on sealing all maintenance shafts and atmospheric ventilation systems up to three nearest-neighbour intersections. The intersections were sealed off by Level 9 force-fields and bulkheads.

Once the organism was transported to the Lab, Doctors Yont and Greene proceeded to examine the organism(s) as described above. We discovered that the organism’s asexual replication consumed vast amounts of oxygen. It attempted to communicate with Doctor Greene and, possibly, escape through the force field.

It was decided that the organism(s) should be further immobilized. To that end, I was instructed to reduce the oxygen levels in the isolated compartment of the lab. To ensure the gas’ pressure equilibrium, the compartment atmosphere was replaced with nitrogen-reach content. This caused the creature to rever to passivated state.

ATTACHMENTS Environmental safety protocols which were devised and conducted in this instance are available in the DS13 main database frame.
