MISSION Routine Navigational Survey. Remapping of Gravitational Waves.

OUTCOME Though this was a routine survey mission, the ship was ambushed, hit with surgical strike that instantly knock out EPS grid, and damaged the Warp Core resulting in catastrophic antimatter release.

KEY PERSONNEL

  • LCDR Ansha Wind-People, XO and Acting Commanding Officer
  • CMDR Caza Yit, Chief of Security (deceased)
  • LCDR Shamaz Ashydi, Chief Medical Officer
  • LCDR Sh'ow, R'Nol, Science Officer
  • LCDR Bihil, Operations Officer (deceased)
  • LT Anakkei Solla, Tactical Officer
  • LTJG Zachary Sweazey, Helm
  • Ensign Oppa Guynes, Navigation and scanning
  • CPO Donas zhe’Nambur, Engineer, Acting Engineering Officer (deceased)

NARRATIVE
On 101892.3 We arrived at location just outside the field/force influence of the Traelus System in the Ba’aja Sector as per orders and began navigational surveys and updates to gravitational maps as necessary. We immediately calibrated our sensors and began our sweep patterns as directed. Scans continued uneventfully for the next 20 shifts (80 hours)

At 101897.83, LT Solla, noted a craft appearing suddenly on the port aft side, 217 Mark -13. Before we could react a large explosion rocked the ship. All power was lost, until emergency batteries kicked in. Engines were unresponsive. Sensors, tactical, and shields were also offline. Hails to engineering met with no response. Red Alert was called. LCDR Sh’ow volunteered to go to engineering and find out what was going on.

At 101897.85, We were able to restore limited sub-space communications and contacted the USS Defender, who was to relay our status and position to Fleet Command, and if possible either assist or have another ship dispatched to assist. Emergency beacons were deployed and distress signals were broadcasts.

Around this time we began to receive reports of a hostile entities boarding the ship and attack crew members with no mercy. Their description was scant but according to one of the security personnel, they were using a form of personal camouflage devices that rendered them hard to see, and in fact invisible in low light environs. It was later determined based on the accounts of several sources that these were Hirogen hunters.

At 101897.9, LCDR Sh’ow, contacted us that he had reached engineering, gravity was off in the engineering space. Debris, smoke, coolant, and bodies were seen floating around. Note: the containment doors would have sealed at this point so LCDR Sh’ow could only look in from a porthole in the central passage.

LCDR Sh’ow stated that one lone individual was still alive in the space. CPO Donas zhe’Nambur, had donned an EVA suit and was trying to keep the now failing containment field in operation. She confided to LCDR Sh’ow that she could not reach the bridge to let us know that we had to abandon ship immediately as containment failure was eminent and that there were Hirogen hunters lurking about the ship.

At 101897.92, the order to abandon ship was given.

It was discovered that some of the single person pods on the bridge were inoperable, most likely as a result of the initial blast. As there were 4 surviving bridge crew left including myself, and 3 pods I instructed LTJG Sweazey and Ensign Guynes to each take one. As LT Solla was severely injured and unable to walk, I placed her in a pod. We attempt to see if I could perhaps squeeze in but this proved impossible so I sent her out in the pod and decided to stay behind.

Power and life support were failing and the temperature was plummeting rapidly, which I hoped might allow me some possible escape. Note: my species is capable of being revived from a frozen state as long as we are not dessicated. Unfortunately the space was beginning to fill with toxic fumes.

It was at this time, I was greeted by an Adjaellian Tardigrade, a species of tardigrade from my species’ home planet Adjaellia Prime. I thought I was hallucinating but it was confirmed by LCDR Sh’ow that was indeed brought in a frozen state to the Defender by this tardigrade.

The last time we encountered this species it was less than friendly. They were a natural predator to my species, and had mauled and killed one of my kind, Megan Wind-People, that had decided to join a merchant marine crew. That particular tardigrade attack and killed several civilian crew and Starfleet Members on that encounter, but this was different. It was able to share, as my species does with touch. A limited form of communication where experiences, the sensory stimuli and emotions involved therein are passed on. I felt its regret, sorrow, and an understanding that they now realize we are also sentient like they are.

There was an understanding in this exchange that since Adjaellia had been laid desolate by Jannesen-Yashal Mining Co, we were both refugees and “countrymen” for lack of a better word, and that our mutual cooperation should be beneficial. In the exchange it sensed my fear, and assured me that our people would no longer be prey (they eat our spores).

The tardigrade had been a prisoner of the Hirogen’s that had attacked our ship. When their boarding ship latched onto the USS Ecstasea, the power dropped long enough for the containment field holding it hostage to drop and it was able escape. It rampaged through their ship and on to ours in an act of revenge. The Hirogens had attempt to hunt on Adjaellia and took this tardigrade at great cost of life after not being able to kill it.

From here I began going into stasis. I remember the tardigrade removing my skeleton structure, etc… rolling me into a ball with my wrist mount tricorder inside ( I had set off the transponder in the hopes of rescue or recovery at some point ) and then we went into some place. It felt like a dream and describing it, especially when I lacked my eye lenses, and was drifting into stasis is impossible. My tricorder was not set to scan or record. All functions were to operation the locator beacon unfortunately.

It was later stated that the tardigrade would leave scanner view as if using some form of trans-dimensional portal or something and then return closer to the Defender. At the current time this phenomenon is unexplained. The tardigrade did not share any surrounding experiences regarding this, or perhaps I could not understand them. It bares further study but the tardigrades are dangerous, hard to corner, and very elusive. The story of my subsequent return is best described by others present.

I awoke in the warm, nutrient bath, in a tank in the botanical science lab onboard the USS Defender in my species’ natural structureless state, where as of this writing, I still am.

Of the 152 crew members onboard the USS Ecstasea, 33 were confirmed dead, either during defense of the ship, initial attack, or succumbing to wounds after; 49 are listed as missing in action as their bodies have not been found; 63 are wounded.

RECOMMENDATION

  • Post investigation we should see if an Adjaellian Tardigrade would be agreeable to study. I do not think it would right off. I would approach this idea cautiously. It should be respected that they have a high degree of rational understanding leaning to sentience but they are still very dangerous when provoked.
  • If we have anymore Miranda Class cruisers in the fleet, they should be retired immediately or upgraded. The Hirogens were able to exploit a weakness at the aft end between the hanger bays, which essentially took out our main and backup EPS conduits.
RECOGNITION
  • Chief Petty Officer Donas zhe’Nambur gave her life trying to maintain the containment grid which gave the crew time to escape. This is worthy of naming a craft in her honor. She was a 35 year veteran of Starfleet and a foremost expert on Miranda class cruisers. Her service to Starfleet and ultimate sacrifice deserves remembrance.
  • Commander Caza Yit lead a team to defend the ship against the boarders. She died in combat after defeating several in bloody hand to hand melee.
  • Lieutenant Commander Shamaz Ashydi, MD, though injured coordinated evacuation of the wounded, and once onboard the Defender, refused treatment for herself until all our injured crew were taken care of.
  • Lieutenant Commander R'Nol Sh'ow though injured investigated the initial conflagration, then organized the surviving crew. He has continued to be supportive, and in my immobile state has stepped up as a leader.
  • Lieutenant Junior Grade Zachary Sweazey assisted with crew member organization once on board the USS Defender. He has since been assisting LCDR Sh'ow and the Defender crew with helping the survivors.
  • The crew of the USS Defender for assisting us in our time of need.

OOC Thank you @Rebelle for letting me wreck your ship. She went down with her boots on. Thank you to @HLtol for being THE player character. :D

The story is not over.

ADDENDUM I included this in an addendum as it should be classified at an elevated level.

The Hirogens that attacked us, did so in Federation space. They very boldly attacked us in a brazen act of aggression. They also knew when and where to strike in my opinion. This was no “lucky shot”. We were pre-occupied in a sector of space that has long since been free of hostilities and generally with the KDF at that. They hit vulnerable section of the ship, and with shields lowered as we were in the process of high powered scans that required such as per SOP.

Reviewing the events in my mind and on my tricorder (what little it got) the Hirogen ship appeared as if out of nowhere suggesting cloaking technology. Granted, if we had the full scanner suite to bear we would have detected their movement at a minimum but for operational reasons we obviously didn’t. The weapon was very powerful. It had to have tore through the hanger bay and several decks therein to reach main engineering. Though this spot is weaker than most of the ship, it is still formidable defensively for all but the most powerful weapons.

Given this, it is my opinion that an investigation into their motives should commence in order to protect Federation Space.
Questions I ask:

  1. was this a splinter group or is the cease-fire of Stardate 51762 now null and void
  2. where and how they acquired this advanced technology
  3. how they were able to learn of or understand our operational procedures, the answer of which might require a change in our "routine" navigational scanning procedures, even in our own sectors that we think of as "safe". My brother, who is with the Romulan Republic was always a big proponent of drones. Though I realize there are restrictions on self-thinking drones being let loose without supervision, I believe a coordinated, manned/remote autonomous scanning effort wherein defensive systems as "next-step" ready and target scans are still done periodically, combined with the use of drones could keep survey ships safer.
  4. how they learned of a weakness in the Miranda design, which in truth is probably the easiest to answer - just go to Drozana station and ask around I would wager.
  5. why they uncharacteristically traveled in such a large craft in such as sizeable group
  6. why they are this far into our quadrant from Delta.

Though I do realize that newer ships such as Lexingtons and Yorktowns are less likely to be taken out in one shot, there is always, a bigger fish.

MISSION Respond to distress call from U.S.S. Ecstasea

OUTCOME We successfully responded to the distress call; however, we arrived too late to save the troubled vessel

KEY PERSONNEL

  • CMDR Zenade, Sunin (Acting Commanding Officer, U.S.S. Defender)
  • CMDR Carlos, Kas (Acting First Officer U.S.S. Defender)
  • CMDR, Six of Eight
  • LCDR, Jack, Nightingale
  • Captain, C’Roren M’Grora (CDF Support)

NARRATIVE During our assistance of clean-up operations on Cait, following a recent security breach, we received a distress call at 101897.85 from the U.S.S. Ecstasea, after relaying the situation to command, and alerting any nearby ships in range, we made the jump to warp speed, shadowed by the C.D.S. Striker, who given the situtation had offered it’s support. With the nature of the call and assistance from Chief Engineer Six of Eight, we took the Defender into Quantum slipstream, pushing the ship as close to the limit as we could. This did cause the C.D.S. Striker to fall behind in our travel to the U.S.S. Ecstasea.

On arrival, we found the ship already in the process of being abandoned, and we made a note of it in our ship’s log. During this LCDR Nightingale took command of our escort, the U.S.S. Leopard, and began supporting operations to help recover the survivors as quickly as we could, with the U.S.S. Defender either tractoring pods into the shuttle bay, once our fighters had launched to provide security, or beaming survivors directly to one of the ship’s multiple sickbays.

During recovery operations, I remained on the bridge to coordinate and direct efforts, whilst CMDR Kas proceeded to direct operations within the shuttlebay, during this he also did his best to provide an ongoing headcount of survivors, when it was noted that LCDR Wind-People was missing, he took ensign K’Triri one of our security officers and proceeded to search the medical bays for her, incase we had been missed off a report, this allowed LCDR Sh’ow and LTJR Sweazey to proceed to the bridge to make use of our ship’s sensors.

Whilst I would normally have our own staff do this search, however, given the fact LCDR Sh’ow was clearly injured and refusing treatment until LCDR Wind-people was found (Wounds of Note, reopening of a gunshot wound to the left side, middle of torso region, minor cuts to the face and hands, including a slight burning of fur covering these areas, fracture to the lower portion of the tail, likely due to landing on it during the attack and slight tearing of the upper left ear)

I allowed them access to the ship’s sensors, something, thanks to brief visits to the Defender, LCDR Sh’ow already knew his way around. During this search, they located two lifeforms of fungal origin and proceeded to beam them into the mostly empty Cargo Bay four, with a containment field placed around it, and Security team Five, one of our more experienced and specialised teams, was summoned to provide support.

I am then told that the creature brought aboard was a tardigrade of some description, and after a brief interaction with LCDR Sh’ow and LTGR Sweazey, the creature returned what appeared to be a small fungal ball of some description. I was then informed this was LCDR Wind-People, and given the nature of her people, I ordered that one of our bontiny labs be made available to ensure she could begin her own healing process. With staff given instructions to make Wind-People as comfortable as possible.

On our return to DS-13, we have done our best to treat and house as many of the survivors as we can, and the ones aboard all seem to be in the process of making a full recovery. With the CDS, Striker providing escort and additional medical support as needed, we are also doing what we can to provide Wind-People the necessary support to become mobile once more, with her currently having a keypadd and communication access from her recovery tank.

Given our time of arrival, we could do little to alter the course of events that led to the ship’s destruction; however, we managed to save all survivors we could find, whilst not a great outcome, this could have been much worse.

Both the Defender and Striker will remain near DS-13 to be on hand for any assistance in the investigation until this is resolved. We are happy to provide bunks or temporary assignments to the crew if needed.

Any inquiries, please direct them to Commander Kas, who will relay them to me.

RECOMMENDATION My recommendations are one of a professional note, which is that we should study this incident as a learning experience. This class of ship and space frame is well past its sell-by date and should be retired as soon as possible. All crew of the Ecstasea should be provided proper time to recover and heal from this experience, and based on the information I have, I feel none of them is to blame for what has happened.

A second recommendation is sadly one of a personal nature from myself, Commander Kas, and Lt Commander Sh’ow, unless there is a desperate need to have Captain Sh’ow S return to DS-13 for questioning, she should be allowed to remain with her family on Cait, Given the lack of involvement of Captain Sh’ow S, during this matter, she will have little to add, and will likely only come under greater stress due to having to leave her cubs and husband behind, during an already stressful time, even more so given Medical staff have informed us, since her and the cubs arrival, Captain H, Sh’ow seems to be recovering and making progress, which they fear will be undone by her leaving during this critical time.

The staff have also informed me that a video terminal can be made available to her if needed to make this easier, with isolating her from events happening naturally due to a focus on care and healing.

I understand Starfleet’s process on this matter. I am simply asking for the Fleet Command to show compassion in this matter to all involved.

(If a recall notice has already been issued, then please disregard and simply try to be understanding of the mental stress the Captain will be under due to this decision to recall her, despite to her current leave.)

RECOGNITION I would like to praise the following people based on their actions today.

CMDR Kas, During this difficult time for the Defender crew, he has been stepping up, providing not only counsel for myself, given his experience, but for the crew, acting like a first officer, and in some ways a father figure to many of our younger crew, I praise the way he took charge of matters in the shuttle bay, and has been doing his best to be on hand if we need him.

CMDR, Six of Eight, Our chief not only helped us keep the Defender in one piece as we rushed to the scene, but has been very helpful in comforting survivors and even offering temporary jobs to one of the less wounded who have been looking for tasks to do, she has also been very helpful in uncovering the full events that caused the ship’s destruction and helping us piece together information that can be provided during any investigation.

LCDR Nightngale, who, despite his limited command experience and training, was able to expertly command the U.S.S. Leopard during recovery operations, not only helping speed up the recovery of survivors by tractor pods closer to the Defender, or beaming them to the Leopard, but also helping provide additional security overwatch whilst the Defender was focused on recovering everyone we could.

LCDR Sh’ow, despite not being part of my crew I feel that due to his injuries, and the way he stepped up despite this, I need to call attention to him, he not only helped calm and comfort crew during this troubled time, but has been providing help in counting and identifying staff, as well as when needed, helping direct survivors around the ship, he only allowed us to treat his wounds once we had located and saved LCDR Wind-people showing dedication and drive that starfleet should be proud of.

LTJR Sweazey, again, whilst not part of my crew, I feel a need to applaud and call out this officer’s bravery and commitment to Starfleet, from what I saw this officer was more than willing to step up when the need arised, helping locate and recover LCDR Wind-People, and from what I have been told, without Sweazey LCDR may not have been able to recover LCDR Wind-People and get her treated as fast as we managed to.

OOC Thanks to @jackascii for GMing this, it was great fun, even though we lost the ship.

Given that Jackacii has covered the Ecstasea part of this event completely, I will skip doing an addendum from R’Nol and simply keep it to one from the Defender side of affairs.

If there are any mistakes, please let me know
