Lauren's parents were homebodies, and rarely left Earth. Even family vacations were usually enjoyed on the same continent. The death of her grandfather, Captain Donald Varley of the U.S.S. Yamato, had a deep effect on her parents (particularly her father), who wanted to keep his family away from the potential dangers of space travel in favour of a life on Earth pursuing his many hobbies such as botany, music, and archaeology. Her mother was happy living a similar life of self-fulfillment, but by the time Lauren was beginning to mature into an adult she found that her parents' quiet ways didn't satisfy her ambitious tendencies. Upon completing a civillian university course on archaeology as recommended by her father, Lauren wanted more, and after persuading her parents she set her eyes on Starfleet Academy. She was accepted for the command track in 2387.

She took her studies very seriously and competitively, going so far as to avoid helping her colleagues to maintain advantages. She made few friends though was far from a quiet student, often challenging her professors on things she disagreed with and putting herself at the front of every opportunity for academic achievement that she could. Lauren did build a few positive relationships, and over her first couple years they and sometimes the academy staff helped her to see the benefit in a more cooperative and social approach to her studies.

Upon graduation she was assigned as conn officer on the Nebula-class U.S.S. Sutherland. Her first time in space opened up a new perspective for her: on Earth, Lauren often failed to see the practical purpose in teamwork when she could accomplish something just as well on her own, but her introduction to the community of a starship had a resounding effect on the way she saw her colleagues. Instead of competition for her to outshine, they became vital allies. The early postings of her career were marked with the dependable success and ambition of her academy years balanced by a growing capacity for productive personal relationships. She excelled in authoritative positions, showing an aptitude for making quick judgments and preferring to take swift action to resolve conflicts rather than a more methodical, passive approach.

By the age of 32 she was promoted to the rank of Commander, and assigned as executive officer of the Akira-class U.S.S. Thunderchild. Less than a year into her new position hostilities with the Klingon Empire reached a breaking point and war was declared. Lauren had little experience with Klingons, meeting only a few in person through her career thus far. Despite Thunderchild taking part in multiple Starfleet-KDF engagements, Lauren was able to maintain a mostly hopeful outlook for the future of the war, believing eventual peace was still attainable. The Battle of Starbase 24 resulted in catastrophic damage to her ship and Lauren lost several friends in the incident. Not destroyed but requiring heavy repair, Thunderchild was towed to the Utopia Planitia Shipyards and the crew reassigned; Lauren found herself executive officer of the U.S.S. San-Francisco.

The Galaxy-class ship was a comforting change for her, the layout reminiscent of her long tenure on the Sutherland. She quickly became good friends with Captain Nylassa Sh'alundi, the two young command officers learning many lessons together. After only two years on the San-Francisco, she was offered a promotion to Captain at age 39 and was assigned to the U.S.S. Beagle as commanding officer.

The Beagle was a Nova-class science vessel, a tiny starship with a small crew compared to her previous postings aboard large cruisers. Despite this (or perhaps because of it) she found herself fond the ship, and she saw it through survey, exploration, and even a supporting role in few first contact scenarios. Lauren's first command lasted for three years, at which point she was selected for one of the newly completed Pathfinder-class long range science vessels. The U.S.S. Sagan boasted the state-of-the-art capabilities of a 25th century starship, and remains the most advanced vessel of her career. She served a brief stint as squadron leader for the 38th fleet, but after the ease of tensions with the Dominion was reassigned to coordinate an expeditionary group in the Gamma Quadrant, updating much of Starfleet's astronomical information for the other side of the wormhole.

When the need for a new commander of Deep Space 13 arose, Lauren was offered the position due to her experience coordinating squadrons and relative familiarity with the operating fleet, the 38th. It was the first position transfer of Lauren's career that gave her pause, understanding that moving away from starship command was often permanent. But eventually she would accept the assignment, handing over captaincy of the much beloved Sagan to the capable hands of her first officer and taking the next great step in her career.

SUMMARY
Captain Varley is in fine health, but like many Starfleet captains, exhibits signs of long-term minor-to-moderate sleep deprivation. It is the opinion of this physician that she is still sufficiently capable of fulfilling her duties, but she has been advised that more sleep more regularly is critical to her well-being.

Captain Varley is rated capable of active duty without reservation at this time.

PURPOSE AND CONTEXT OF EVALUATION

Basic Profile Assessment.

CONCLUSION

Authority finds subject to be of sound mental health and fit for active duty.

DISCUSSION

Upon first impression, subject presents a resolute and pensively grounded manner, which lends an air of seriousness that is probably used to great effect when working with crew. However, what was more and completely unanticipated on the authority's part was how easily this solemn aura was broken by the subject's ready smiles and other expressions of amusement, a surprising but not unwelcome discovery. Subject professes that she does prefer working amongst those who are socially inclusive and have a sense of humor that rises as easily as her own, but authority notes that her ability to maintain a serious mien likely enables her to work just as successfully with those who don't, a flexibility that many could envy.

Subject is tremendously cerebral, with a critical dislike for the acknowledged sometimes-necessity of force, and utilizes her own experiences to guide her conclusions on the potential motivations of others. Authority measures that the subject maintains a moderately positive outlook on other sentients, with a more temperately neutral view on circumstances beyond her control. Though her initially reserved manner means that she does not quite follow the boisterously confident Captain archetype, the subject still possesses the irrepressible streak of ambition that motivates her to greater, more self-fulfilling work and achievements.
