Greetings, officers.

No doubt by now you have all heard of Mr. Hawkins and his supposed Orb of the Prophets. Regrettably this situation has rapidly deteriorated and resulted in a violent riot earlier today on our own starbase. Some of this fault lies with me for not immediately recognizing the significance of Mr. Hawkinā€™s demonstrations, and for that I apologise. But now I need your best work so that we can get back ontop of this situation and resolve it.

Lieutenants Beles and Loxton,

My thanks to you and your teams in controlling the riots today. I have reviewed all relevant information pertaining to the incident in the Event Horizon Lounge yesterday, including security feed footage and recordings. Effective immediately, Mr. Henry Hawkins is to be released from custody and returned to his residence aboard Deep Space 13, where he will remain under passive surveillance. You may direct any objections to this order directly to me, after you carry it out.

As I understand it, his orb is liable to follow him around wherever we move him. If this happens, do not attempt to interfere, but prevent him from conducting any more public services with the orb. Until we know more, we canā€™t risk the potential danger. I will be informing him of this restriction myself.

Lieutenant Izly,

I need an update on Captain Nimitz's status. Assuming his condition is presently stable and recovering, please direct your efforts in determining what exactly happened to him when he touched the orb. Send your findings to Commander Mandra, Sciences will require a full report to aid their research into the incident. I believe Captain Nimitz's body is substantially augmented with biomechanical technology, if you require an engineering specialist to aid in your examination please contact Commander H'ajah.

Commander Mandra,

I require your services in the examination of this orb. Unfortunately we can't simply give it to you, as it seems to teleport to Mr. Hawkins' side. I will be contacting him in attempt to gain his cooperation. Assuming I'm succesful and we move the orb to one of your labs, your objectives are as follows:
  1. Determine the cause of Captain Nimitzā€™s accident with the orb. We need to identify what happened to our officer, and how. Medical will forward whatever they can learn about the Captainā€™s accident, please coordinate with them for further information.
  2. Determine any further risks the orb may pose to the starbase. Based on your findings through objective #1, Iā€™ll need an informed recommendation from you regarding any potential safety hazards this orb may pose.

Iā€™ve attached the relevant report in case you missed it. Please disregard all of Commander Valoreā€™s recommendations at this time, Iā€™ll handle that side of the situation. One of your staff, Ensign Thyzee, has already done some cursory investigation of the orb as per my personal request. She may have valuable insight for you, but for the moment keep her at an armā€™s length from the investigation itself. I apologise for throwing this at your feet, but I need all of our resources on this.

A final note for you doctor, at this time I am not interested in determining whether this orb is a real orb of the prophets not, whatever that means. It has demonstrated itself as a hazard and that is the only problem we should be adressing right now.

Sorry for the delay Captain. I am awaiting confirmation you have permission to have the object studied. I will get a lab prepped for when that happens.

I got the medical report, but until the former I can do little with the information I think. I do know an off site neurology expert I could ask some questions to though if you wanted.

I also am trying to keep Thyzee involved but not overeager. I hear she requested doing what is essentially a telepathic scan of Nimitz to help himā€¦ but there is a lot of unknowns there and I think Command needs to ok that even if Nimitz is ok already so Iā€™m keeping the expectation of that low for now.

Mr. Hawkins has permitted my request, you should find the orb moved to your lab soon. As for the telepathic scan, if Captain Nimitz consents to it and medical doesnā€™t have any concerns, I donā€™t see why not. But assuming those requirements are met, Iā€™ll leave the final judgement to you.

I do apologize for getting to this as late as I did; though I was busy with the report itself along with a few other sudden incidents we had to handle. Again the report has been put in as youā€™ve all seen, and otherwise I would like to know if the presence of Medical Staff would be required for the telepathic scan of Captain Nimitz; while I have no concerns with it being done, I believe having one of the team or myself sitting in may be of moderate help during said scan.

This took longer than I wished to get compiled for you. I apologize up front for that. There are certainly a lot of parties pushing for this data.

As requested, I pushed aside any notions of whether this object was a genuine Bajoran Orb or not. This being said, when time permitted various elements of it that came out in testing phases did line up with recorded information. It might be worth considering getting the Vedek Assembly involved as such.

Though the reason I say even that much is because my official recommendation is to get it away from the station entirely. If that means barring Mr. Hawkins as well, I think that might be worth it. I am unsure if he means well or not. I think he believes he does.

The object has shown in testing an ability to recognize the mental state of a living conscious mind trying to interact with it. It can be surmised something in itā€™s construction is able to interpret mental intent. However it is configured to do this is unknown, but it shows traces of verteron particle signatures, much like the Bajoran Wormhole, so higher dimensional energies are at play here.

To elaborate on the intent of action. If someone attempts to interact with the object, it is able to interpret if this person wants to treat it as the religious icon Hawkins claims it is, and has benign or ā€œfaithfulā€ aims. It responds as he intentsā€¦ presumably with visions according to trusted sources in the lab tests. Those aiming to interact with the object without these views or who want almost anything other than accepting the story line being levied are, for lack of a better word, attacked and forced back. Precisely as Captain Nimitz was in Event Horizon. We have managed to avoid incidents of plagued visions in the subjects that agreed to test this angle. Iā€™ll spare you the details in this message how we did this, but theyā€™ll be in the full report, attached. Further, we were able to prove that in the object is interacted with by a mobile entity without an active conscious mind, consider a basic hologram or simple machine, the object doesā€¦ nothing. It can be removed from the casing, manipulatedā€¦ and scanned. Though the scans didnā€™t reveal too much themselves. It does however teleport itself back into the case after a while, similar to how it auto-locates to Hawkins.

On another matter, and why I have Lt. Izly on this message, besides that she and Medical can use the test data, is that I am getting more push from Ensign Thyzee about assisting Captain Nimitz who is still seeing visions from the object. You told me to keep her at a distance from this which I have, but you also implied it was ok to try her attempted therapy. I am however, less confident in this manner. We have a medical report and know that there is unusual brain activity in the Captain. Perhaps Nimitz does need some form of telepathic therapy, and if you really are ok with her doing this I can let her be involved but I highly recommend Medical have a major presence and monitor them both during this with some means to end it if anything goes wrong.

If I am being entirely honest tooā€¦ Counseling should be involved in thisā€¦ even before this procedure, Nimitz should have been in contact with them about this issue I think. That, however, is my opinion. I cannot dictate his choices after all. There are also Counselors with more experience in telepathic therapies I think as well, perhaps you should consider them being involved as well.

Anyway. if this moves ahead it wonā€™t strictly be a Science Department operation, even if it involves one of my people. Thus, these are my notes and recommendations. For the official word on moving forward with this therapy for Captain Nimitz, I move it to yourself. If you need to consult Fleet Command or Nimitz himself first Iā€™d suggest some haste, not just because of haste from certain parties but because the Captain is still suffering to a degree, and I do believe he needs help however it is sourced.
