Absolutely agreed! The Orville has been hitting it out of the park but this episode in particular was really great.
The limitations on Union tech (transporters and their different first contact policiee) really help these sorts of stories have more punch. The idea of astrological alien society is very, very cool and the way it was integrated into the society on all levels made it weird but not unrealistic.
Between this episode and Nothing Left On Earth Excepting Fishes, I am very invested and admiring of Captain Mercer. Didn't know Seth was this able to act. Ed feels like a relatable Captain, with hw he does get frustrated and how he approaches issues.
(He also very much reminds me of Tau lol)

I will agree that Birthday cake and All fishes in the world are most likely the best episodes so far by the Orville. However, I gotta say the latest episode was a bad ripoff the two episodes from TNG Data's Day and In Theory.
It was a character piece of a robot trying to learn love. I'm not sure I'd call that a rip-off - it's a pretty classic theme. "Robot learns what it is to be human" isn't exactly copyrighted by tng
Personally I was shocked that the entire episode was about dating and romance and that they didn't force a b plot.
I found it refreshing and sweet.

So the latest episode was interesting, but unfortunately for me it just feels like yet another rehash of a previous episode of Star Trek the Next Generation, this time The Outcast.
While I will admit the story was better this time around... I’m starting to get a little tired of all the focus being on the Moclans lately, not that I don’t like them, but I still feel that they are unnecessarily grouping so many episodes together that have to do with the crew putting up with pushing their tolerance of the Moclans.

It's interesting that you see it that way. It may very well be unnecessary grouping of episodes, but I got some foreshadowy feelings from it. They're building them up as not super compatible with the rest of the Union, and as an ally that the union needs. Potential for exploring a crisis there.

I'm kinda with you, Kermit. They're really drawing the lines of cultural difference between the Moclans and the rest of the Union where morals are involved.
They've worked to do several thithis season and last; they have out Klyden and Bortus in conflict multiple times. They've had the Moclans make very awful decisions in a court multiple times now.
And the Moclans JUST installed a special shield on the Orville that they engineered followed by a Union office "corrupting" one of their officers.
It feel like there's a build to something. Mercer underlined how the Union needs the Moclans...and it seemed pointed.
I've been loving all of these character pieces. We needed to get to know Talla, and now we know how she works. That's important to make her not be an Alara clone.

Today's episode left me very very happy.
While Tai getting off the ship was a blatant plot contrivance to answer the question of "what happened to the Kaylon's creators, the episode really shows us how optimistic the Union is - to an absolute fault. They're clearly excited to explore and accept alien species and it's to a fault ... Like we see with the Moclans, or more seriously right now, with the Kaylon.
With how this seems to be leading to a direct fleet battle over Earth, it will be interesting to see how this incident is going to affect how the Union views non members, or even more violent members.

My first thought was that the Kaylons were cylons...
all things given, I am actually quite happy with this episode, I've been looking forward to finding out more about the Kaylons since the first episode.

All I can say is... it's about time Orville stepped up their game. They went from Voyager/Enterprise knockoff to damn good sci-fi in one amazing episode.

I just hope they can keep it up moving forward, don't get me wrong, I do like the Orville, but I was starting to question where to put my expectations at for new episodes.
During the beginning of the episode I said "Huh. Wonder if they ever asked who built the Kaylons in the first place."

The character pieces were very important, in my mind. I could do a whole season of all small character episodes and with their style of writing be more satisifed than many seasons of hot and cold Trek shows with their quality variance.

Did you catch that she's dated 'The Emissary' in two shows now? That was a cute reference.

Who else thinks that Yaphit (Normblob) will play a role in saving the ship next week? Those filthy clankers are ill-equipped to handle a heroic blob with love in his heart!

WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT THE FACT THAT YAPHIT WENT INTO ISAAC TO FIX HIM BUT NEVER CAME OUT?!

I... just assumed they went over budget because of that space battle?
Oh, and regarding the Krill commander and Mercer:
"It would seem that we are not completely dissimilar after all. In our hopes... or in our fears."
"Yes."
"Well then. Perhaps... one day..."

So... the Orville is no longer going to be airing on Fox in the US, it is now a Hulu Original programming, season three will not be expected until fall 2020.
Well that is a bit of a wait.... ah well, at least it is happening.
The move is interesting. I guess Fox can't feel comfortable having a good Scifi show airing for this long, lol. Though they've been a Hulu partner for years. This is likely a financial move for them, and it might actually help the show in the long run be safe from Fox's itchy trigger finger on the cancel gun.
While it's not a streaming show, Hulu is still more accessible than All Access so it still has a leg up for more people since a lot of network stuff is on it as well. This is not meant to disparage anything in particular, but it is worth noting.
