Does your character have roleplay-relevant IC traits you don't often express in text?
Thinking about it, there are things about all of my characters that I have in my minds eye, that I never have found a way to make clear in most casual roleplay. Things most people can observe in character, and notice, but might be awkward to emote often or at all in conversation? Maybe they show up in the bio once, but let's be fair - we all use dossiers more often for relevant info.
So, I suppose, this can be a place to list relevant facts for roleplay people can observe.
I'll start with an example!

Tau
Thue
- Tau has a noticeable Tswana accent. It isn't thick, but it's very much there. ((Edit: Accent tag video for illustration - Tau's accent is more subtle, and he's obviously not a woman, but he does still kind of roll his 'r's. ))
- He is also multi-lingual, like many Starfleet officers are. In addition to the Tswana he will commonly enough lapse into in private (and which seems to be his preferred language to speak), there are physical books in his office that appear to be in Latin(..?!), English, and one in ... Norwegian Bokmål ...?
- I don't over-emote about it just to do it! Tau almost always has some degree of a genuinely happy smile on his face. Is he crazy, jolly or weird..?
Thue
- Thue also has an accent - she doesn't have the cultured, High Rihannsu accent of those born to a good house or in good regions. Her accent is more rough, which is contradictory to her highly intellectual nature. Of course, this is when the Universal Translator isn't doing it's job for everyone not speaking her native tongue.
- She never quite eats full meals and often declines to eat in public. In fact, despite seeming perfectly hale and passing all physical exams, when seen in a swimsuit Thue's body fat level (everywhere that it isn't important to keeping her 'figure', which she apparently manages to do) indicates she's underweight.
- Thue never appears to fully relax in public situations. Her eyes are always darting and moving around the room, taking information in, and her movements and physical behaviors might suggest someone with a hyperactivity 'disorder' in current IRL terms. As too would her sometimes frantic speech patterns. Whether this is Romulan paranoia or something else isn't clear.
- She has never been seen speaking other languages and relies exclusively on her Universal Translator. If someone speaks too quickly or uses slang, sometimes she appears to have trouble keeping up. But alien languages, they are filthy...

Tilly
- Tillly speaks with the typical Detak Regional accent, which sounds remarkably like a Irish accent. It's light unless she's speaking in basic, using loanwords and such. When she sings it creeps in too.
- Tilly gesticulates with her hands when she speaks, far more than I feel comfortable emoting, sometimes she'll point at people, usually with a thumb or with the index and middle fingers. She also counts in the traditional European style, using the thumb for 'three'.
- She smirks a lot, and I emote it, but it's not meant to be mean or dismissive, it's just her natural goto expression.
- She sometimes will move her body subtly to music if it's playing. I don't always emote that out. In fact a lot of her motion is fluid and sorta graceful, still controlled and purposeful, but not sharp or rigid.

Alina
I'll put in other characters later on. All my Romulans have distinct accents, so that's something I enjoy covering.
- Alina's sardonic personality leads her to several facial ticks that are hard for me to quantify in text, leading me to reuse the action of smirking a lot. I throw in a snerk or snicker sometimes just to keep it fresh but in reality it is meant to be slightly different each time and something that more or less makes sense visually more than described. Similar to Tilly, it is rarely meant negatively if she actually smirks, which does happen.
- She is prone to verbal tics I often leave out. One that does appear is her heavy usage of the word "heh" in sentences. It doesn't mean anything, but she makes the noise as an unconscious reaction to almost anything. This is distinct from "heheh" which is more of a chuckle. Heh is not necessarily good or bad. Other verbal things include "pfft," "Mmm," and "tah," (the last is a soft noise made with her tongue, sometimes done alone or in a series.
- She looks in various directions constantly. Typically, it is due to the synesthesia system. Most who know her will assume she is actually looking at something in second sight. This is true only about half the time. She actually has trouble maintaining eye contact, even when she is listening.
- She fidgets. A lot. A typical thing to see will be her shifting her weight back and forth between her legs, often times rocking on the heels of her shoes, sometimes with all the weight on just one foot for longer than one would expect. She has really good balance though due to her dancing ability. She also seemed to be completely unable to decide what to do with her hands. They'll move from her hips, to nearby table/counter/chair, to fidgeting with the other hand, to tapping on her thighs or a nearby surface. Her left hand also sometimes will make motions similar to what she does when holding a violin as if she is playing a song only she hears (which she can do, but often isn't). She will also lightly scratch herself out of nervousness. Keen observers have seen her habit of scratching the back of her head when she is embarrassed. She also fusses with her hair a lot, usually running a hand through it, rubbing her eyes is common even if nothing bothers her, and rubbing the back of her neck idly.
- Her voice is very light accented, but not very soft. She also has a habit of speaking sentences in a singing sort of rhythm even when not actually singing. It can sound odd due to the UT though. She never speaks Federation Standard Linguacode on her own (but can understand it like any citizen) but speaks full on Trill with the UT. Thing is, she can speak standard just fine, but she practically thinks in musical cadence and can't do it that way.
I'll put in other characters later on. All my Romulans have distinct accents, so that's something I enjoy covering.

Caspius
- Caspius is quite taciturn, which I fear sometimes comes across as me being disengaged from RP. He seldom ventures his opinion unasked, unless he considers that it is necessary so to do because of the importance of the situation. Usually he watches people patiently and with an unvarying, slightly frowning expression, which I virtually never emote. Part of this is because he is a Vulcan, but if I am honest, part of it is also because it is how I conduct myself in meetings.
- His typical response to interesting information is to raise an eyebrow but say nothing. I emote this a lot, and I worry that I do it too much, but I do so because I feel that I need some kind of emote to show that the information being relayed in the RP is being acknowledged (and that I am not AFK!). And as above, this is a half-Vulcan, half-me thing.
- Caspius is only half-Vulcan, of course--he is also half-Romulan, and I try to play this without it being overtly identifiable as 'emotion'--yet it still has to be there. It comes across as a sort of obsessive fastidiousness, even to the point that he is a bit of a martinet. So there are a lot of thin, purse-lipped looks which verge on glaring. Tuvok is really the inspiration for this more than, say, Spock or T'Pol. I try not to emote it too often but this is probably something for which I have not got the balance quite right yet.
- Caspius never fidgets, or taps his foot, or anything of that sort. And his posture is excellent: he always sits straight up, and when he stands up he is ramrod-straight. I don't think I've ever emoted this, but I probably should (especially given Spock's frequently shocking posture). This is probably a Tuvok-inspired thing, but also half-me again. ::stands up very straight::
- We will probably never actually RP out our DS-13 chamber players in concert, but Caspius plays the Violin quite metronomically. He is technically very good, but something is missing. He's much better on the piano, however, but it is a studied thing: like a picture of someone smiling, rather than someone actually smiling. So a good ear can tell that every aspect of his performance--even any thing that sounds 'of the moment'--is rehearsed.

Nimitz
- Nimitz tends to walk in a typical Romulan way, usually entering the room like he owns the place, and tends to carry himself with pride.
- Nimitz does have a High Rihannsu accent, but over the years it's been mixed with a North American accent
- While he uses the UT, he can and does usually speak in English as well as read and write in English.
- When seen wearing a short sleeve shirt or his sleeveless vest, his arms can be shown to have faint plasma burn scars.

Elena Zecou
Liana Zecou
- Elena is very expressive when she speaks, frequently making broad hand gestures and other physical movements, especially when she's excited.
- Without a UT, Elena and all other Varanaka, speak a mish mash of multiple Vulcan and Terran languages and dialects.
- Elena tends to speak quite quickly when excited, but when she is in one of her rarer, more serene-like moods, her words tend to flow in a more eloquent, lyrical fashion.
Liana Zecou
- Unlike her daughter, Elena, Liana's speech is always evenly measured and eloquent; reflecting her more serene and calm personality.
- Liana doesn't gesture nearly as much as Elena and the other Varanaka.
- Without a UT, Liana Zecou speaks perfect Vulcan.

- Sam always looks like she is close to snapping a salute.
- She speaks in a gruff deep voice, as if her vocal cords have been injured from yelling.
- When she walks it is very stiff and ceremonial this goes for her stance in general. Without even asking it is obvious she is a soldier.
- Though Sam is not hard on the eyes, her facial expression is almost always drawn into a slight grim scowl as if said scowl had been permanently welded onto her face. Had she chosen another path in life she has one of those faces that just makes you want to open up, which ties in with her sister having done exactly that, her sister being a psychiatrist.
- Sam rarely smiles or laughs and when she does it sounds odd and unpracticed but not at all unwelcome, you can easily tell when she is genuinely having a good time.

Anyway, I really can't think of anything about my characters right now...
Sivath is almost always working; he never seems to idle. When seen in the lounge, he is usually reviewing reports of station maintenance and other sub-department digests. He comes there for two reasons: to escape the interruptions inevitable when he is in main engineering, and because he believes that constant supervision is detrimental to the efficiency of his subordinates.
I don't often emote about what Sivath's up to unless someone approaches him, to give them scene-setting information. But it's a safe bet that if he's sitting at a table in the lounge, he has a PADD in one hand, a cup of tea in the other and a look of mild disapproval on his face.

* Her most common resting expressions are (mildly) skeptical, amused, or curious.
* Good posture.
* Thinks and speaks native Trill with some Federation Standard and a lot of scientific jargon from Greek, Latin, English, etc.
* Recently cut her hair shorter to try to stop herself from fidgeting with it. Will probably continue to anyway.
* Often has a PADD in hand or close by, with reading material. Usually has a tricorder on or near her as well.
Taela t'Parnus
* Mhiessan accent, low-middle class - compare New York/Brooklyn, Kansai-ben, Cockney/Brummie. Tries to tighten it up a bit when making reports to superiors, gets stronger when passionate (which is often).
* Casual, laid-back posture; can shift quickly from this into action.
* Not a good liar or card player - easy to read.
* Habitual shoulder-hoverer.
Mabruk
* Manners and carriage of a professional soldier, with a century in service. Instinctively checks corners, moves quickly and quietly, etc. Not very good at hiding this; can pass as a bodyguard or mercenary, but never a civilian. (Not a spy.)
* Has trained to endure "normal" light levels, but still prefers to stick to the shadows and dim corners of rooms. Looms/lurks very well.
* Uses a clipped form of the formal military dialect when speaking to Rihannsu, particularly officers. Among fellow Havrannsu, adds additional meaning (almost a second channel) with frequent handsign.
* "Mabruk scowls" can be assumed even when not explicitly emoted.

He usually has a clock with him, a small clock handmade that he carries with him every, single time.
He normally maintains an elegant posture while sat. Never described.

- Sam tends to always have a warm smile on his face when he talks to people to encourage them to open up.
- In meetings, he often leans back in his chair, sometimes has his arms folded and always has his legs stretched out under the table. This signals him listening and he'll often remain quiet, preferring to listen to how the conversation pans out before stepping in. When he wants to make, he'll lean into the table to join in with the conversation.
- Sam walks about with authority, back straight and deliberate.
- Whilst Sam tends to be friendly, he can have a snobbish air to him too, something that creeps in involuntarily from his privileged background.
- Sam will always try to make a joke in any scenario, to help to ease tension and lighten the mood. This does not mean he's not taking the job at hand seriously, but it's meant to allow others to become more comfortable around him.
If I think of more I'll add them

Rekar

Nalah
- Rekar has an Okhalan accent from Mirhassa ICly. That doesn't really mean anything of course, so I imagine him speaking with what sounds sort of like a Croatian accent (the inspiration was the actress who plays Delenn on Babylon 5, who is in fact Croatian). His isn't super thick but it is noticeable, and marks him clearly out as distinct among most Republic Romulans. This is a subtle way of mine to note how while he serves in the Republic usually, he is from a non-Republic world. Not all Mirhassans sound like this, but Okhala is one of the larger population centers there so many still do.
- Rekar likes to tinker with devices, often without purpose or meaning. There is a running joke that he creates fempto-singularities in boxes to use as portable 'batteries.' While Rekar is an expert on Singularity physics and engineering... he is not actually capable of such feats with modern tech. He is actually just messing with people when he brandishes those, but since no one has ever examined it, he never admits it. As such his constant tinkering is literally to no aim.
- Rekar's right hand shakes. It's an artificial hand, sometimes he likes to slam into things or hit it to stop the shake, which is due to poor calibration. Rekar is notable for having both his lower legs being mechanical, as well as his right arm due to a past incident that nearly killed him. He as such walks with a heavy gait and his footfalls can be distracting. Biosynthetic limbs that are more natural are available, he purposefully denied them for unspoken reasons.
- His voice box is also assisted, so at times his speech will almost sound mechanical, but it is just an artifact of the tech.
- He acts a lot worse off than he really is, this is not a visible trait really, but worth noting based on the above.
Taiv
- Speaks with a thick Harkanian accent. Taiv is from ch'Havran, known colloquially as Remus. I use a mix of book and canon details for this. In thee books many Romulans lived on Remus which was not the hellscape Nemesis implied.. but that is canon so I just merge the two and say Harkan, the capital, is on the terminator so it a bit more temperate and the Remans live on the dark side in the mines as canon (well.. did, since the planet is gone now). I worked in some fridge logic here since the Remans were sorta Nosferatu styled; I decided ch'Havran had a Transylvanian kind of quality, so I made Taiv's accent a thick Romanian accent, and just called it Harkanian ICly. His accent is very noticeable and hard to miss so I do mention it in emotes sometimes.
- Typically holds a dour expression, despite the fact he isn't actually that broody and will smile at anything amusing and even laugh. It's his internal thoughts that bring about his less happy expression.
- Holds a very regal posture and conducts himself in the standard of a noble Rihannsu, but the family he comes from is actually on the lower end of nobility (S'Feiahn followed other houses before the split from the Empire). Taiv sees himself as representing his wife's family though, and since S'Sahen is an extremely large and well known family it is best not to make it look bad.
Nalah
- Despite coming from the same place as Taiv (being his adopted sister), she does not have a think accent. In fact, Nalah speaks so softly and in such a measured way it is hard to detect an accent unless you are listening really hard (then you can hear the faintest of the same Romanian accent). Nalah in fact had voice training in her youth, but even now her voice has what some Rihannsu would call a "rustic quality." A human equivilant might be "country bumpkin" but Nalah would be very unhappy with that implication. (In the books, ch'Havran was known for it's farmers).
- Will talk really fast often, and is incessantly cheerful and polite.. which is unusual to people who are used to typical Romulan behavior. Sometimes her cadence will take on an almost Mordin Solus type of speech (for you Mass Effect fans) which she will forego pronouns, speak very tersely, and sometimes forget to breath until the end of the sentence.
- Smiles a lot, and tends to lightly clap her hands when amused. She does this about science stuff too if she finds it amusing... even if it is something others would find unsettling. As long as she learns stuff she is happy though.
- Acts lady like, but is not afraid to interrupt that facade to be honest, and has a bit of a wild side. Still maintains good posture though, because her father wouldn't have liked it if she represented the family poorly.

Dmitri
- Dmitri speaks with a slight russian accent, despite his upbringing in the states, his parents were not originally from the states and he adopted their accents. It isn't prominent, but it's there and occasionally pops up in speech. It's no where to the level of 'nuclear wessels'. It can especially appear when he becomes frustrated.
- He attempts to keep a cool exterior as much as he can, I attempt to show this by his smiling which can come off as excessive at times or a lack of emotes in my arsenal.
- He is a highly agreeable individual until he isn't. He'll fall silent if something something irritates him unless it's something that he believes he should correct. In which case he is no longer agreeable.
- When not telling the truth or embellishing it he has a knack of rubbing the back of his neck. It comes the same when he has bad news.
- Dmitri will always attempt to look on the good side of things, people, situations what have you. He'll try to find at least some smidgen of good.

Timoreev
- Andrej uses many Russian typical intercalaries while talking, even more if the situation becomes tense. However, he doesn't have a prominent Russian accent, paradoxically. His long standing far from Russia helped him mitigate it.
- Sometimes, Timoreev looks as he's "zoning out": just looking at a point in front of him, completely immersed in his thoughts. This happens particularly when an event or a conversation brought his memories to surface.
- Timoreev uses to express his own thoughts loudly (although he has been able to mitigate this little issue since he has been promoted to captain).
- He tends to behave and act like an old-fashioned gentleman, particularly in informal occasions, and sometimes this trait can make him look a little naive.
- It is extremely rare to see Timoreev losing his temper. Indeed, he's often able to keep his most violent emotions at bay. However, in those rare instances he breaks this self-control, it is very far from being the amicable and agreeable person he often is.

- Her accent is actually kinda 'low class' for someone of her family background, a bit of a Romulan version of a thick southern accent rather than the more 'posh' tones one would expect.
- The eye implant she has is constantly telescoping back and forth, in a near permanent state of readjustment as it clashes with biological features.
- She talks with her hands, often gesturing and waving them about as she speaks.
- She's very bad at eye contact, often looking just next to her other part of the conversation.

- When not in uniform he is usually sporting his cowboy boots.
- When he sees his friends on duty he usually gives them the six shooters and says "Howdy (INSERT RANK HERE)"

- While it's no secret (anymore!) that Keelah wears her heart on her sleeve, she is still relatively naive in matters of expression and when faced with awkward or uncertain situations will often default to her old ways of feigning an emotionally cold and more typical Vulcan facade. Whilst this sometimes comes out in specific RP circumstances, it is still probably not as prominent in emoting as it is in head canon.
- She is light on her feet resultant from a lifetime of formal dance training. When she walks, she will often do so leaning more on the balls of her feet than her heels which is one reason she so comfortably wears heeled boots most of the time. This can present a rather more graceful approach than is often intended or desired.
- Keelah is incredibly self conscious and subsequently easily hurt or offended when she misinterprets reactions from others. Her suddenly going quiet can often be misconstrued as her player losing interest or running out of things to say.
Mischa
- Mischa speaks with a highborn Cambridgeshire accent which is seldom emoted but glaringly apparent upon any conversation with her. ((In case you can't picture the accent)):Spoiler: Show
- Though she has been known adopt many varieties of body language and even dialects in the line of duty (or sometimes just for fun), her default go to is still the eloquent and presentable way she was brought up. Whilst it can be apparent in RP when she deviates from this natural state, it is seldom so obvious when she normally presents with it.
- As subtle as she may be in conducting her affairs on a daily basis; the more astute and similarly aware individuals around her would take note of the constant poise - even when appearing to be relaxing - and Mischa's general awareness of her surroundings. They may even note her eyes scanning a room as she enters; mentally conducting threat assessments on every individual, marking exits and blind spots.
- She has a mischievous and rebellious streak a light year wide. Though mostly it is firmly hidden by her professional and more more mature facade since progressing her career; the most obvious telltale of this outside her occasional playful smirk is when someone catches a rare glimpse of the lesser seen dragon tattoo spanning from her thigh up her back and over the shoulders.Spoiler: Show

Lendaria
- Lennie is wild child; most apparent through her speech of which a great deal of effort is put in to present. As a natural linguist however she is capable of speaking more eloquently and will often do so through a conscious effort - normally when on duty. This can offer appear simply as an oversight or lapse in the emoting of her usual broken dialect but is quite intentional. Her native accent itself is intended to represent the much rougher traders tongue dialect of Orion, and the universal translator's best effort to cope with the rough language. It has been affectionately likened to a 'southern drawl'
- She is highly animated in her movement as one might expect from an Orion female. Moreso than is often emoted as it rarely seems pertinent in day to day interactions.
- Owing largely to her troubled start in life; Lennie is fiercely protective of those close to her, often to a fault. A sudden shift in disposition when she feels she or someone close is threatened can easily be misread as aggressive.
- Lennie is severely claustrophobic. While this has never transitioned into agoraphobia when around large groups of people, it has often had subtle emoting which often goes quite understated.
J'Fojofae
- Jojo is understandably naive when it comes to social niceties among Federation species. She will often carry herself with the confidence wrought among her own people without due consideration to the differences in races she now interacts with. Though seldom clear in emoting, this happy and confident facade can quickly give way to a shy and timid one on the rare occasion she actually realizes a faux pas.
- She adores technology; specifically cybernetics. Known to but a few who have got close to Jojo, her species - whilst being more than capable of discreet cybernetics - has developed a quirky obsession with the fashion of visible augmentations. Whilst her surface reaction to those with visible implants like Liberated Borg is quite apparent, the underlying emotion and intent is often easily missed.
Rianni
- When not in direct social interaction, her standard go to is sitting and staring into space. This can often just look like the player afk but is actually her default idle. It is just something I find difficult to emote and remain conscious of overdoing it.
- Whilst her amnesia is heavily played, what often flies under the radar is her reactions when uncertain. Subtle emphasis is often placed on her polite smiling as a smaller and less exaggerated version of when the Terminator tries to smile! This will often present when she does not fully understand the context of something but reads from others that such a reaction is likely to be expected at the time. The other end of this spectrum is when she smiles 'subconsciously', being where something truly registers with her or holds an impact - this would be a much more natural smile that over time comes into more frequent use. Because of the gradual transition, the context can often be lost through simple emoting.
- Her instinctive reaction when she doesn't fully understand something either said or done in front of her is a single blink. Whilst this is often emoted, the context is seldom apparent.
Mia
- Whilst Mia's presentation as a hologram is generally clear by the presence of the support drone projecting her physical appearance; I find I generally don't emphasize just how much the projected image flickers as she moves, though it is in fact quite frequent while her program/s adjust to their new existence.
- Despite coming across as a very extroverted personality, she is still trying to find her place in the modern world and will often choose to 'hide' while moving throughout the ship or station by not projecting the hologram and simply blending into the background as the drone on it's own.
