ROLE OF GOVERNMENT

The Thylizine government is an oligarchy, based on competitive social climbing of families. The top-tier families have a direct role in government, and these positions are highly sought after by the families of the Thylizine. However, the people generally lean towards libertarianism, and the government itself has very limited actual control, granting surprising amounts of freedoms for the citizens.

Historically, there have been attempts at monarchies in the past, but the emphasis on family lines and the ability for each individual to trace back so many generations lent itself to a gathering of familial representatives, rather than a single, all-encompassing ruler.

FIRST CONTACT

The Thylizine were first exploring warp speed in the year 2159, and encountered the Betazoids in the home sector. They maintained pleasant relations for several years, and while the Betazoids encountered humans and Vulcans shortly thereafter, the Thylizine spent more time developing industry in the solar system and neighboring K-class planets.

Humans and Vulcans didn’t encounter the Thylizine until 2240, almost a hundred years later. The Thylizine kept to themselves until that point, making no particular interstellar waves. Initially, a Thylizine transport sent out a distress call which a Federation ship answered. That’s when Starfleet first encountered the Thylizine.

HISTORY WITH THE FEDERATION

After the Federation encountered the Thylizine for the first time, during the transport distress call, the two groups maintained an amicable contact. The government at the time was still somewhat fractured and argumentative, but with the developments of their people, they became more unified over time.

With the Betazoids and the Federation as examples, they improved, and by early 2312, they had unified their government enough and developed enough of their colonies (to their own satisfaction) to apply (and receive) Federation membership. Since then, they have been quiet, helpful members of the Federation, causing no waves.

PHYSIOLOGY

The Thylizine (plural) or Thyliz (singular) are a bipedal, marsupial, humanoid species. The generally accepted name for the species comes from the humans’ label for them, they call themselves the Shezlan. They are easily identified by their tawny to auburn skin, with hair and stripes of black, brown or auburn, matching each other. The stripes begin on the forehead and run down the sides of the face and the back.

They have forward facing eyes with slitted pupils that allow for binocular vision and greater light sensitivity. Thylizine also have tapetum lucidum, which greatly increases their low-light vision, and causes them to have a bluish-green reflection at night. They have a good (but not much more than average) sense of smell. It is disputed as to whether or not they evolved from predators that hunted primarily with sight or scent, but the current theory is sight. This theory is furthered by the extra types of color-receptive cones: they have a total of five, as opposed to a human's three.

The smile of the average Thyliz seems a bit offset to most humanoids, as they have a slightly different arrangement of teeth. Like the average marsupial, the number of incisors is different from the upper jaw to the lower. They have twelve molars (including “wisdom teeth” which they have no problems with, unlike humans), eight premolars, four canines in total, with six incisors on the lower jaw, and four on the upper. This is only slightly more than the average humanoid, although their evolutionary ancestor had a much greater total of 44 teeth in its excessively elongated jaw.

BIOLOGY

The Thylizine has an extended lifespan of approximately two hundred fifty years on average. This extended time begins at conception. They spend three months developing in a uterus before being ‘born’ and moved into a pouch on the lower abdomen. They spend the next nine months in the pouch, being fed milk from the mother. At that point, the strain reaches a maximum that the pouch on an upright posture can handle and the child is ‘born’ again. Then, it is approximately the size and development of a human infant at birth. They are nursed like a normal placental mammal from then on forward. In order to keep parental attention on the infant being raised, the Thylizine have evolved hormonal changes that prevent a pregnancy from occurring until the previous young has been fully weaned.

Their childhood mimics that of most humanoids, developmentally, except that it takes an extended period of time. They do not reach physical maturity until the age of twenty eight, and are not considered adults until thirty. The last part of development is the forebrain, in those last two years, affecting judgment and decision-making abilities.

Full development included strong leg muscles primarily built from fast-twitch muscle fibers; they are good sprinters, but poor at distance running. They are strong jumpers, and many excel in sports like hurdles or jumping events, but are not as agile as other species overall. They prefer a warm to hot environment, but can tolerate a wide variety of humidity. The homeworld has ecosystems ranging from wetlands to dry forests, to traditional woodlands and grasslands.

As adults, the Thylizine are requisite carnivores. They are incapable of producing taurine. However, they react well to synthesized taurine, permitting the species to survive on replicated meals, which they have since learned to enjoy. Many Thylizine supplement a primarily meat-based (whether natural or replicated) diet with limited fruits and vegetables for variety in taste. They are incapable of digesting leafy greens, although eating them is harmless. Caffeine in large amounts is dangerous to them, so they tend to avoid chocolate, tea and coffee.

The Thylizine don’t show signs of aging until approximately one hundred and seventy five years old, at which point they do not tend to go grey like many humans. Instead, they tend to ‘fade’ in color, appearing less vibrant or crisp. Other common geriatric deteriorations are poor eyesight, fading hearing or sense of smell and arthritis in the joints. At the age of two hundred and twenty five, deterioration increases drastically and much medical assistance is required to improve quality of life.

The main concern of most Thylizine is reproductive health. Infant mortality is high, and so quality medical care and parenting is at a premium.

SOCIETY

Coming from a carnivorous species originally, one might presume that the Thylizine are an aggressive society. In fact, they are not. Instead, the Thylizine tend to be close-knit, and reserved, almost secretive. However, they have a strong innate curiosity, which has always been a driving force in their social evolution. This results in the average Thyliz being friendly, until proven otherwise.

The part of their society that is often commented upon by those studying it is their dedication to their heritage. Everything from their government, to their naming conventions, revolves around bloodlines and family ties. Each Thylizine can recite back several generations of family lines, and the family name is the priority when naming a child. What one’s family does is paramount, as well as what their social standing is. Each individual’s accomplishments contribute to the social standing of the family, and it is an intricate dance of power where the lead is constantly changing hands.

Most families have a matriarchal leader (who is not necessarily the governmental representative) and a trio of male advisors. One is usually a senior, older male, who can advise as a representative of economics and trade--the bearer of wisdom, one is usually a more militant, aggressive advisor--bearer of the claw, and the final one represents the wishes of the family in general--bearer of the heart. They work together to try and increase the overall standing of the family amongst that of the others. While the matriarch is the titular ruler of the family, the advisors can overrule her, if necessary.

Coming from such a background as this, it is unsurprising that Thylizine are very social within their own kind, forming strong family bonds. They live in large, multi-generational family groups, and, depending on location, are even willing to share space with other family groups, although they prefer to each have space to themselves. Thylizine that join Starfleet occasionally report loneliness or homesickness at times due to being isolated from living with large groups of people, particularly once they reach a rank where quarters are no longer shared.

Parents are usually active in the young’s rearing and education. There is a standard education format, but it includes are great deal of parental participation, when possible.

POLITICS

The government is made up of a small group of representatives from the seven most influential families on the planet. These families can change, and the representatives can be replaced. Each representative is selected by the entire family and confirmed by the matriarch. The confirmation is almost entirely show, as she traditionally never objects to the family’s choice. It is never one of the four (Matriarch or four Advisors) themselves. The Federation Council representative is chosen by the seven representatives.

Cutthroat political maneuvering is frequently involved at the levels where families are struggling to remain counted among the ruling families, or are trying to jump ahead one or two families into the ranks of the ruling families. Studying this upper-middle level gives an opportunity to see how the majority of the exchanges of power occur. These families collect favors and influence from lower families that have no hope of ascending to the ruling families anytime soon, to sway people to their causes. In exchange, they offer protection and sometimes physical materials.

Commonly, if a family wants to raise its standing within the Shezlan is by arranged marriage. The eldest child is usually chosen to marry higher up--they carry the primary and most powerful family name--and so the influence their marriage carries with them is backed by the more powerful family of the two that spawned them. This raises the estimation of the lower-ranked family, being bound by alliance to the higher-ranked. The higher family, in exchange, receives a dowry of some kind. It doesn't matter if the lower-ranked spouse is male or female, its entirely dependent on social ranking. This can be material wealth, supplies, luxuries, or things used to buy influence with even lower-ranked families as support. The system of favors between families is old and well-established, contracts going back thousands of years. For the families that straddle the line between ruling or not, political favors and marriages are the basic coin of their existence.

This oligarchy is fairly limited in its power. Major planetary projects are in its purview, however, it follows Federation law, with very few local laws in place. Its purpose is mainly to ensure that things continue to run smoothly, and to keep trade between the colonies and other species running well.

CULTURE

The arts are celebrated amongst the Thylizine, and there are a few families that have risen to prominence on the skill of their artistic geniuses. Music is especially prized, with a number of original instruments as well as adopting those from any culture they encounter to create some of the most unique orchestras extant. The most popular instrument of the Thylizine is a mallet instrument called a cuison played with four mallets, the ends wrapped in soft fabric for a gentler sound, or occasionally hard rubber for some of the more aggressive music. The layout is not dissimilar to a xylophone.

Modern popular music includes a heavy-metal sound with traditional stringed instruments and a peculiar vocalization reminiscent of throat-singing.

Spoiler: Example of human music similar to ThylizineShow

Visual arts vary from paintings to moving holographic images. Realism and detail is highly sought after.

Dance is also well-developed on Thyla. They have group social dancing as well as group and solo performance-style dancing. It is an exceptionally well-loved form of expression, not unlike how it has developed on Earth. Couples dancing is famed and competitive, resembling some of the wilder Latin dances such as Argentine Tango and Paso Doble. It is often compared to aggressive mating dances of some birds, flashy and expressive.

LANGUAGE AND NAMING CONVENTIONS

Due to their developing speech while still having an extra number of teeth and a slightly elongated jaw earlier in their development, some sounds carried over into their language, as well as some sounds are less frequent. Dental articulators are uncommon while soft sounds and rolling R’s more often occur. In addition, they have a series of vocalizations peculiar to their communication that do not have a translation, but are used to get the attention of someone they want to communicate with. They sound like, “Yip-yap,” “Cay-yip,” or “Hop-hop-hop!” Scientists theorize it originated with hunting packs and a guttural, barking sound.

Reports on their naming conventions of the Thylizine conflicted for many years until they joined the Federation and experts could be asked. Each Thyliz has three names. Two family names and a given name (otherwise known as ‘soul’ name). In Thylizine culture, the two family names come first. The order in which they come is determined by the societal standing of the two parents’ families in question, and the birth order.

Spoiler: For example:Show

  • Curra Lorae Xiran (Family name 1, Family name 2, Given Name)

    Marries

  • Luuen Moen Nael (Family name 3, Family name 4, Given Name)

They have two children. Xiran’s family (the Curra) is of higher social standing than Nael’s first family (the Luuen), so their first child bears the higher social name first. The second child alternates this, so each has a chance to pass on their name. The result looks like:

  • Firstborn: Curra Luuen Maeol
  • Secondborn: Luuen Curra Reepha

RELIGION

The ancestors of the Shezlan developed a polytheistic, spirit-based religion. Initially, it began with the veneration of spirits in all things, but over time became far more structured. The Thylizine faith at its height had a strict caste system of the gods.

Each level of the castes determined how much power a god held and over how much it had sway. For example, a greater god would be the god of plants, in general. This god (greater gods were considered too far above mortals to have names) also represented nature's reclamation and fury, in the aspects of plants taking over ill-cared for mortal structures. In the end, all things are reclaimed by nature.

At the opposite end of the spectrum were tiny spirit-gods that inhabited small objects in everyday life and accompanied and individual. These were not unlike personal spirits that aided someone. These did have names. Every village, town, or city had its own set of deities to watch over it. This ended in a multitude of gods to venerate and respect. One was responsible for knowing the greater gods, the local gods, and one's personal gods.

This caste system became reflected in Shezlan society in earlier years, and the effects can still be seen today in the constant jockeying for position in the families. While most individuals today do not practice any strict religion, there is an almost superstitious belief in the old gods and their influence on an individual's life. Very few people would admit they still believe in the gods, yet they might practice small, traditional acts to appease them as well as call upon them without thinking.

HOLIDAYS

  • Nightwatch: A holiday traditionally celebrated during the midwinter night. Participants rest during the daytime prior and remain awake for the entirety of the night. Legend has it that they are ensuring that the sun rises the next day. This holiday has both children's and adults versions, as activities vary to keep people awake as long as possible. Children are not expected to make it all night, but adults will go to great lengths to stay alert.

TECHNOLOGY REPORT

Spoiler: MedicalShow
RATING: Average

The Thylizine are members of the Federation, so they enjoy the benefits of membership when it comes to technology. However, their primary focus is on reproductive medicine due to the high incidences of infant mortality. Their medical research tends to be in that direction, and the most prestigious medical degrees remain those in pediatrics. All medicine is of value, though, and they honor healers of all kinds. Research is encouraged.

Spoiler: ScienceShow
RATING: Average

The planet has a rich biological realm to research, both of flora and fauna, as well as an extensive fossil record. Physical and planetary sciences flourish, as they are intensely curious about themselves and the world(s) around them. ‘Softer’ sciences are perhaps not as enthusiastically pursued, but are not neglected. They are on average with most Federation planets.

Spoiler: EngineeringShow
RATING: Average

The Thylizine are warp-capable, but have long since converted the last of their warp ships into transports for trade or ferrying people from colony to colony. They leave defense and exploration to their Federation partners, content to send people to serve in Starfleet.

They receive the benefits of Federation technology, but they personally specialize in designing equipment for replicators, both on individual and industrial scales, trying to make them more efficient.
