Star Trek Discovery (SPOILERS)

I like Lorca! But we just know he's going to get himself killed eventually.
Hear that, Tau? You should be more like Lorca!

Tardigrade is just a giant teddy bear when it isn't being tortured for near-instantaneous space travel! Yeah pretty clear once the war is done the ethics committee in Starfleet is going to see what this does and do their best to make sure SFI tosses it under the rug to never see the light of day. It would seem like that has worked so far, heh.
That meme though :p
Oh before I forget, not episode related but I saw this earlier. Apparently Eaglemoss, recently showing off a new prototype of their Discovery ship figures, revealed the class of the Discovery and the Glenn is called the Crossfield class. I was told this was later confirmed by the dedication plaque on the show. So now we have the class names for both Discovery and Shenzou (previously confirmed as Walker class).

I think I've just seen one of the worst character deaths in history. Honestly, that was silly; and plainly stupid.
I'm also a bit startled by the moving saucer, since I cannot find the usefulness of it.
And the whole thing that few Birds of Prey were able to bombard a critical Federation installation without Starfleet having any other possibility than calling the Discovery in didn't satisfy me very much.

I donno... I'm gona disagree with you there, I'm sure we'll see the effect of it in the next episode since they hinted at a very close and very personal relationship between her and the Captain, and the next episode is centered around the Captain

Well, at least I hope so, because as it is now, it has no sense. And her behavior was not that of a proven Starfleet officer, to say the least.

We also need to keep in mind, we've really only seen what Burnham sees, we don't know much about the rest of the crew.

It's worth noting that the whole saucer doesn't move, just parts of it. Memory Alpha says it's to facilitate 'excess energy cavitation', but I have no idea what that means.

"To look cool." That's what it means. Because everything is better with spinning.

Also, Timoreev, you say that as if it wasn't a cliche overused trope tradition for the Hero Ship to be The Only Ship In the Quadrant Able to Respond to the threat (in time).

Recent discussions of these points and others in various forums currently have me tipped to the position of "yes, it's stupid. guess what, great big chunks of Trek are stupid. If anything, being stupid in these particular ways makes it more Trek. Look on page 1 of the list, between 'holodeck malfunction' and 'main deflector', and take a drink."

And THAT is why, so far, the last episode has been the only episode I can honestly say I have enjoyed.
Those would look neat in STO but for a show that takes place in the TOS era, those are some mighty advanced looking ships.

I think that, and you think that, but the people that CBS is trying to get to watch the show think that TOS ships are too simple and old and dumb.
Ditto beige turtlenecks.
I know, I know. But we're a dying breed on the wrong end of history.

My mistake, by "saucer" I meant, indeed, only a part of it (I honestly don't know how to call it). About the explanation, I don't know what to think. The whole "spore engine" concept still leaves me deeply startled, after all.

I don't know. They look very ENT, especially deflector design-wise. It kind of makes sense.
I view it as most of the Starfleet in DSC is older designs (read: post-ENT) still being phased out and the cleaner looking TOS designs are newer and still being introduced and become more common by the 60s. Yes the Constitution and the Enterprise herself have been around since 2245 but they may be a test bed for some of the newer TOS designs and one of the first. Also we only ever saw the Enterprise circa 2254 and 2260s on. For all we know in '45 it looked yet again different when Robert April had command. It is known for its cosmetic changes over the years after all. Discovery itself looks cleaner in design too. It is said to be an older ship but heavily refitted with the latest tech so it may have gotten part of that cleaned up new look treatment that becomes standard later.
They never say that the Discovery's an older ship. In fact, they explicitly stated it's fresh out of the shipyards.

But I also think it (and its sister ship, the Glenn) are supposed to be unique designs, meant to take advantage of the Spore Drive.

I don't know, Discovery's registry number is NCC-1031 and Glenn's is NCC-1030. Compare that to Shenzhou (NCC-1227) and Enterprise (NCC-1701), and it really does seem likely that it's an older ship.
