The U.S.S. Defender (NCC-93136) is a Federation Sovereign Class starship operated by Starfleet. While no longer necessarily the most advanced in the fleet, ships of this class have undergone a number of minor refit cycles, allowing them to remain on par with newer designs.

History

The U.S.S. Defender was constructed as part of the fleet reconstruction efforts following the events of 2401, the ship had it shake down cruise before being deployed to Klingon front in 2405 as part of the 7th fleet as part of patrol and defensive operations to ensure the security of Federation space.

Following three years on the Klingon front the U.S.S. Defender was recalled to undergo a refit of it’s power systems and ensure it was in-line with current Starfleet standards, before once again being deployed to the Klingon front as the war between the Federation and Klingon Empire heated up, the Defender suffered it’s fair share of loses and weapons fire in it’s time on the front, including at least two boarding actions by the Klingon empire, with each being repulsed by joint efforts of Starfleet Security, and MACO staff that where deployed to the ship during the first refit.

In 2408, following a series of repairs made to the ship following heavy fighting at Cestus III as part of the force to repel the Klingon Empire’s attack on the Federation, the Defender was reassigned to the Romulan Boarder. This was following reports of a change in leadership to the Romulan Star Empire, with the Defender now tasked with Patrol and Diplomatic duties. The U.S.S. Defender met with both Star Empire and Romulan Republic personal in support of Starfleet’s attempts to call for peace between the two Romulan factions.

However in 2414 the Defender was called away from the Romulan boarder and back to the San Francisco Fleet Yards for a small series of repairs, as well as take on new crew and supplies, with the crew then being brief on it’s current assignment, which was to assist with security and patrols in Romulan Republic Space. The Defender spent the Iconian War assisting in Romulan security, launching hit and run attacks where possible. Without a cloaking device the Defender often used natural barriers to hide from Iconian sensors or would be used as bait for the Republic vessels the Defender was teamed up with.

After one combat action in early 2415 that caught the ship and allies by surprise the Defender was forced to return to the Fleet Yards once again, having been limited to low warp speeds by an Iconian Virus, this time however the Defender was kept in the Fleet yards for an extended Retrofit and repair, which included cleaning the Virus from the ships System’s, which often prevented the ship from reaching it’s higher warp speeds until it was purged.

Once the virus was fully removed from the ship System’s in early 2417 it was deployed back to the Romulan boarder once again in it’s patrol and Diplomatic duties, as well as supporting Romulan rebuilding efforts following the events of the Iconian War.

The Defender then had a mostly uneventful service life, where it mainly encountered scattered Star Empire forces as well as Pirate forces, only returning to Federation stations for resupplies as well as to rotate crew or take on new crew as needed. However in 2422 the Defender had it’s first encounter with the Borg, suffering damage as well as injuries and losses to the crew, before returning to Fleet yards for repairs.

Then in 2423 with a change of Captain the ship was deployed to the 38th Fleet, with the ship patch and information updated with the change of deployment.

Measuring at 685 meters with 26 decks (24 habitable), the design of the Sovereign Class consists of two hull sections: a saucer-shaped primary hull and a secondary hull which mounts two warp nacelles. Defender was designed to carry a standard complement of 850 officers and crew. In an emergency situation, the Sovereign Class is rated to carry up to 6,500 passengers for a limited duration.

Unlike larger explorer-type cruiser classes, accommodations for civilian families are not present on the Sovereign Class, but the range of usual amenities are available to the ship’s crew, including a number of holodecks and recreational facilities. Defender possesses two full sickbay facilities and several science labs.

Command & Control Systems

Sovereign Class Bridge Layout

The computer systems aboard the Sovereign Class are based on bio-neural circuitry, as pioneered by the Intrepid-class. The ship employs two computer cores, one each in the primary and secondary hulls. Operational control of the ship is provided by the main bridge, located on Deck 1. While Sovereign Class ships are not capable of saucer separation, they do still possess a secondary control room in the Engineering section.

Propulsion & Power Generation

Defender possesses a standard Sovereign Class matter/antimatter warp drive, with an average output of 4,000+ teradynes per second. Her standard cruising velocity is Warp 6, with a maximum cruise of up to Warp 9.7. Defender is rated for a top speed of 9.985 for a period of up to 12 hours. Sublight propulsion is achieved primarily through the use of the vessel’s large twin impulse engines, located on the trailing edge of the primary hull. Fine maneuvering control is provided by RCS Thrusters.

The Sovereign Class warp core serves as the primary source of power for all ship systems, supplanted by the vessel’s conventional deuterium fusion and impulse reactors.

Tactical & Defensive Systems

In addition to advanced regenerative deflector shielding and ablative hull armor, Defender also carries an impressive array of weaponry.

Seven dorsal phaser arrays are located on the primary hull. One array extends around the saucer section, giving it an oval appearance, while six smaller arrays cover the aft dorsal firing arcs and are located along the aft portion of the saucer section, above the main shuttlebay. Four ventral phaser arrays are located on the primary hull, extending around in nearly a half circle on both the starboard and port ventral sides of the saucer section. A single phaser array is located along the ventral section of the engineering hull, running perpendicular to the hull. Four additional arrays are present on the trailing edges of the warp nacelle pylons (one dorsal and one ventral for each pylon), bringing the total phaser array count to sixteen.

A single rapid-fire quantum torpedo launcher is mounted on a turret on the ventral portion of the saucer. Two Twin-tube photon torpedo launchers (one facing fore, one aft) are present at the bottom of the secondary hull. An additional twin-tube launcher is situated facing aft, on the primary hull, above the main shuttlebay. Aft-facing single-tube launchers are located, one each, above and below the secondary shuttlebay. Finally, a single-tube fore-facing launcher is present on Deck 3 of the dorsal saucer.

To meet with current standards in 2415, the Torpedo tubes where all uprated to be able to fire both the ship’s Quantum and Photon Torpedoes, to enhance it’s combat ability.

Auxiliary Spacecraft

The Sovereign Class main shuttlebay, located at the dorsal stern of the primary hull, is especially large and able accommodate several runabout-type vessels, in addition to a full complement of more standard shuttlecraft. Defender, specifically, carries four large Type 11 Shuttles, six Type 9’s and eight Type 8’s. Eight CMU “Workbees” are also carried onboard to assist with cargo and field repair operations. Additionally, the Sovereign Class also features an integrated Captain’s Yacht, which is normally docked to a special port on the ventral side of the saucer section, below the torpedo turret.

The ship originally had Type-6 Shuttlecraft in it’s complement, however following the retrofit in 2415 this was updated to be Type-8 Shuttlecraft, to meet with current Starfleet Standards.
