The USS Saratoga (NCC-74817) is a Federation Sovereign Class starship operated by Starfleet. This is the fourth vessel of the class and the third Federation starship to bear the name. While no longer necessarily the most advanced in the fleet, ships of this class have undergone a number of minor refit cycles, allowing them to remain on par with newer designs.
History
Commissioned near the end of the Dominion War, the USS Saratoga was the fourth vessel of the Sovereign Class. After her shakedown, Saratoga operated out of Deep Space 9, participating in several engagements throughout 2375. After the war, the vessel was assigned to diplomatic and patrol duties along the Cardassian border. In 2386, Saratoga began a long-term exploration cruise in the Beta Quadrant, but was recalled after only 14 months to assist with the Hobus Supernova Crisis. The vessel would spend the next 25 years assigned to the 7th Fleet operating near the Romulan and Klingon borders. At the end of 2412, Saratoga put in for a major systems overhaul at Utopia Planitia and was subsequently reassigned to Task Force Argo, stationed at Deep Space 13, the following year.
When the Iconian War began in 2414, Saratoga was returning from an exploratory mission on the edge of Breen space. The vessel was heavily damaged in the initial engagements, and subsequently limited to sublight speed. The vessel would spend the next half year dodging patrols and hiding in nebulae, before finally being assisted back to Federation space. After a significant amount of repair and retrofit time in drydock at Deep Space 13, Saratoga briefly returned to service but was plagued by lingering engineering issues. Saratoga returned to Utopia Planitia where it spent eleven months undergoing a complete primary systems retrofit.
Late in 2416, Saratoga finally returned to service with 38th Fleet.

Measuring at 685 meters with 26 decks (24 habitable), the design of the Sovereign Class consists of two hull sections: a saucer-shaped primary hull and a secondary hull which mounts two warp nacelles. Saratoga was designed to carry a standard complement of 850 officers and crew. In an emergency situation, the Sovereign Class is rated to carry up to 6,500 passengers for a limited duration.
Unlike larger explorer-type cruiser classes, accommodations for civilian families are not present on the Sovereign Class, but the range of usual amenities are available to the ship’s crew, including a number of holodecks and recreational facilities. Saratoga possesses two full sickbay facilities and several science labs.
Command & Control Systems
The computer systems aboard the Sovereign Class are based on bio-neural circuitry, as pioneered by the Intrepid-class. The ship employs two computer cores, one each in the primary and secondary hulls. Operational control of the ship is provided by the main bridge, located on Deck 1. While Sovereign Class ships are not capable of saucer separation, they do still possess a secondary control room in the Engineering section.
Propulsion & Power Generation
Saratoga possesses a standard Sovereign Class matter/antimatter warp drive, with an average output of 4,000+ teradynes per second. Her standard cruising velocity is Warp 6, with a maximum cruise of up to Warp 9.7. Saratoga is rated for a top speed of 9.985 for a period of up to 12 hours. Sublight propulsion is achieved primarily through the use of the vessel’s large twin impulse engines, located on the trailing edge of the primary hull. Fine maneuvering control is provided by RCS Thrusters.
The Sovereign Class warp core serves as the primary source of power for all ship systems, supplanted by the vessel’s conventional deuterium fusion and impulse reactors.
Tactical & Defensive Systems
In addition to advanced regenerative deflector shielding and ablative hull armor, Saratoga also carries an impressive array of weaponry.
Seven dorsal phaser arrays are located on the primary hull. One array extends around the saucer section, giving it an oval appearance, while six smaller arrays cover the aft dorsal firing arcs and are located along the aft portion of the saucer section, above the main shuttlebay. Four ventral phaser arrays are located on the primary hull, extending around in nearly a half circle on both the starboard and port ventral sides of the saucer section. A single phaser array is located along the ventral section of the engineering hull, running perpendicular to the hull. Four additional arrays are present on the trailing edges of the warp nacelle pylons (one dorsal and one ventral for each pylon), bringing the total phaser array count to sixteen.
A single rapid-fire quantum torpedo launcher is mounted on a turret on the ventral portion of the saucer. Two Twin-tube photon torpedo launchers (one facing fore, one aft) are present at the bottom of the secondary hull. An additional twin-tube launcher is situated facing aft, on the primary hull, above the main shuttlebay. Aft-facing single-tube launchers are located, one each, above and below the secondary shuttlebay. Finally, a single-tube fore-facing launcher is present on Deck 3 of the dorsal saucer.
Auxiliary Spacecraft
The Sovereign Class main shuttlebay, located at the dorsal stern of the primary hull, is especially large and able accommodate several runabout-type vessels, in addition to a full complement of more standard shuttlecraft. Saratoga, specifically, carries four large Type 11 Shuttles, six Type 9’s and eight Type 6’s. Eight CMU “Workbees” are also carried onboard to assist with cargo and field repair operations. Additionally, the Sovereign Class also features an integrated Captain’s Yacht, which is normally docked to a special port on the ventral side of the saucer section, below the torpedo turret.
