The U.S.S. Kassandra is one of the Federations Refit Projects, part of the initiative to prolong the life of the extremely viable and reliable Galaxy class. Refitted to be able to deal with the new dangers the Federation faced after the collapse of the Khitomer Accords and increased hostility with the Klingons. One of the later ships to receive the treatment, the Kassandra has since served as both a frontline vessel and a rapid response vessel for emergencies. With the enhanced Transwarp capabilities and a Quantum Slipstream Drive, she can respond to any emergency quickly and efficiently.

Prior to coming under the command of Captain Derix, the Kassandra was on rapid response duty, with her home port being Earth Spacedock. For 4 years, Captain Alyson Kennedy commanded the ship into multiple engagements and rescue missions throughout Federation Space, earning the ship a reputation, amongst allies and enemies alike, for showing up when you would least expect it. Combined with Captain Kennedy's hit-and-run tactics and enthusiastic nature in rerquests for aid, the ship is known to have been the deciding factor in quite a few skirmishes in its past.

Captain Kennedy was offered the position of Rear Admiral and took it, leaving the Kassandra without a Captain. Now under the command of Captain Derix, she has been assigned to 38th Fleet after a brief period up refits and a shakedown cruise for the crew involving mostly patrol duty. With a partly new, partly old crew, the Kassandra is now ready to serve in the 38th and live up to its reputation.
