The U.S.S. Lexington's modifications are almost identical to that of her sister ship, the U.S.S. Valley Forge. It was the success of the Valley Forge's design that green-lit many of the changes made to the Lexington.

Among the improvements was the installation of a warp core in line with modern specifications. To this end, the original ventral shuttlebay has been reworked to accommodate the new core, and two vertical launch shuttlebays have been retrofitted to the port and starboard dorsal engineering section. The original nacelles, both lost during combat, are completely replaced. Like the Valley Forge, the saucer section has been rebuilt to accommodate separation, with the saucer now equipped with tertiary nacelles that are capable of low warp.

Other areas of improvement include replaced sensor arrays and main deflector dish, a rebuilt bridge and new laboratory facilities. The overall refit has been completed with minimal sacrifice of the vessel's former battle capability as she retains a standard dorsal/ventral phaser array, four forward torpedo bays and two rear, in addition to an upgraded dual beam bank on the nose of the saucer.
