NARRATIVE
The U.S.S. Defender reported to a location just ten lightyears, from the Cait System near the edge of the CDF’s operational area. Lieutenant Jhizit, the chief helm officer then proceeded to follow the reported flight plan of the U.S.S. Avon at warp five, in an attempt to find a signal from the missing shuttle to help with locating the missing Captain.
During this flight the ship’s sensors detected nothing until we reached a point thirty lightyears from the edge of Caitian Space, with a very weak and faint automated distress call detected, using this and the hard work of Commander Sieth and Lieutenant Tisa, we where able to locate the missing shuttle and after running scans on the shuttle and detecting no life signs, we brought the heavily damaged shuttle into the Defender’s main shuttle bay.
The shuttle in the bay was surrounded by the Defender’s fighter pilots who all as a precaution had armed themselves with type-2 phasers, a engineering team and medical team where also on standby. When myself and Commander Zenade arrived in the shuttle bay, Commander Eight of Six and her team opened the shuttle so we could look inside.
Taking our time myself, Commander Zenade, Eight of Six and Nightingale proceeded inside where we found the deceased body of Lieutenant Junior Grade, P’Nau Hsoia, a Caitian Ferasan Hybrid pilot who had volunteered to pilot the Captain to Cait, after a brief examination of the body in the shuttle, the medical team then removed the body carefully to sickbay for Commander T’Soph to be able to perform a more in-depth examination.
Whilst this happened Eight of Six attempted to restore power to the shuttles computers, which luckily had been largely undamaged despite the visible signs of a fight and the discharge of energy weapons in the shuttle cabin. The Commander then found that at the time of the attack a personal log was being recorded by the Captain, which had been left running due to the speed of the attack, this log detailed the attack which was carried out by a first generation Caitian Shikaris Escort, due to this being a common vessel of the Caitian Defense force, it seems this is what caused the Captain and pilot to be caught off guard.
The escort then fired without warning quickly and effectively disabled the Runabout, with two officers from the escort beaming over to the U.S.S. Avon, one officer quickly firing the shot that killed Lieutenant Junior Grade, P’Nau Hsoia, and after a brief struggle as the Captain attempted to over power the other officer, stunned Captain Sh’ow. After the pair then secured the Captain in handcuffs and commented on needing the Captain alive, proceeded to fire on the shuttle consoles a few times in an attempt to stop information being gathered from it, the pair then beamed off with the Captain in custody, with the Escort shortly warping away.
After this information was brought to light myself and Commander Zenade headed to sickbay to get the Medical report from Commander T’Soph, with her report noting that the Pilot had not only been killed but had the word Iz’cathari had been clawed into the pilot’s head, a word previously seem applied to Hybrid officers by a PMC group that Starfleet previously marked as out of action, and it was confirmed that a phaser blast to the chest killed the pilot.
Taking the information to the bridge we soon find a weak warp trail which we followed as far as possible, soon picking up an asteroid field just outside the Kern system, with the ship sensors also picking up two Caitian Escorts at long range, Commander Zenade then gave the order to hold position just at the edge of sensor range and deploy a modified Class IX Long-Range Multi-mission Warp Probe into the system to monitor the field and ships inside.
When the Probe arrived in the system and took up a position near an asteroid to help avoid detection, it was noted that the field was home to an asteroid base built into a large asteroid near the center of the field, this base seem to be protected by the two escorts, with one of the escorts markings and signal matching the one that attacked the U.S.S. Avon, this escort seems to be one that ventures out to attack ships, with the other remaining behind to protect the base with a small fighter compliment which was housed in the base itself.
Following some more discreet observations the information collected by the probe, also of note was a heavily modified Atrox class entering and leaving the system at least one during the probes two hours of observation.
For the moment the Defender is now holding position just outside of what we believe to be the sensor range of the Escorts and Bases sensor range, making use of the ships hull plating and a nearby moon in the Kern system to hide ourselves from detection, as we gather information and attempt to identify the group behind this kidnapping.
RECOMMENDATION My recommendation is plain and simply.
We go into the system following some more observation and board the base with the aim of capturing the base commander and either rescuing or locating where the Captain is being held.
Whilst the Defender is a very capable vessel, and with it’s on-board fighters and escort could handle the mission without support, the use of additional ships and staff in this attempt would help reduce strain on ship resources and help ensure that no one from the base escapes or is able to hamper our efforts to locate and rescue Captain Sh’ow.
RECOGNITION The crew of the Defender all acted with the professional attitude and skill I have come to expect of them, not allowing the removal of certain modifications to impede their actions. Whilst overall our mission was a failure as the Captain is still missing, the crew did their best to try and locate Captain Sh’ow and see to his safe return.
