LOCATION Deep Space, Aldebaran Sector

MISSION Locating a missing freighter.

OUTCOME Frieghter rescued, through this led to the U.S.S. Endeavour being infected with Cthon. They were eventually removed, but required the ejecting of the warp core.

KEY PERSONNEL

  • CAPT Mirazuni, A.
  • CAPT Nimitz, A.
  • CAPT Nimitz, T.

BACKGROUND CAPT Nimitz briefed us on a previous mission involving a Preserver facility used to imprison a species known as the Cthon. It was feared that the Cthon had broken free of the system.

NARRATIVE Following this briefing, the U.S.S. Endeavour and the U.S.S. Scharnhorst were deployed to respond to investigate the last known position of Forcas IV. This freighter was recently reported missing and near the quarantine zone. Initial scans revealed elevated warp speed beyond standard safe limits, raised shields, and minimal life signs aboard.

Attempts to hail were met with only static. Upon visual magnification, we observed Cthon entities crawling over the hull. They completed unknown tasks and vanished into blue portals. An asteroid attached to the freighter’s hull detached and began drifting toward us under webbed propulsion. It was destroyed by joint fire from the Endeavour and Scharnhorst. Life pods were ejected, but scans confirmed no survivors aboard.

Efforts were made to board the freighter, but it dropped out of warp and engaged in evasive manoeuvres, ultimately targeting the Scharnhorst. Coordinated repulsor and tractor beams successfully neutralised the vessel. In an attempt to save the four remaining crew, a medical emergency beam-out was ordered.

The crew extracted were found to be infected with Cthon larvae or symbiotic organisms embedded in the base of the skull. All four were fully conscious and mentally aware, under total control of the Cthon. Upon arrival in containment, the parasites removed themselves, killing the hosts instantly, then disappeared through miniature portals.

As the Cthon were telepathic, I attempted to track their location. However, this proved to be difficult and caused me to remove myself from command due to ill health. Before I departed, I ordered an internal quarantine and placed Captain Nimitz in command of the vessel.

I was sedated when entering medical to assist my recovery. The remainder of the mission will be recounted by others who were there.

RECOMMENDATION The Cthon are dangerous. Efforts should be made to return them to their prison on the ConAm Outpost 423, as this seems the safest and most humane way to deal with the species.

RECOGNITION Captain Nimitz, T. is to be commended. Though our approach differed at times, this did not cause any contention between us.

ADDENDUM This addendum follows from CAPT Mirazuni’s report.

As I entered the bridge, the Cthon on the crew who were beamed aboard had begun to portal their way through the ship. Security teams were outfitted with kinetic weapons from the armouries and sent to hunt the bugs, alongside teams from the U.S.S. Defender, who had responded to the ship’s distress call.

On the bridge, several plans were made. As the bugs fed on energy, it was decided to cut energy in the ship to evacuate the crew to centralised areas. Science teams on the three vessels worked on ways to place the ship in a dampening field to stop the Cthon from portalling.

In the ready room, we found a member of the crew, controlled by a Cthon, trying to gain access to the ship’s systems. They weren’t able to access much, but did get access to the ship’s technical readouts, and placed the ship’s shuttles, transporters, and lifepods on lock. When the Cthon found out that it was surrounded, it portalled away, leaving the crew member dead. When checking the deceased’s combadge, we found out where the Cthon were hiding, and began to get reports of them down in main engineering.

Reaching Deck 21, one of the Cthon attempted to attack us. The disruption field was deployed successfully, and the Cthon was killed. We carried on to Main Engineering, where two of the bugs were trying to access the warp core.

With options restricted, Captain Nimitz ordered the warp core to be ejected; this was done safely by Lieutenant Jeei, killing the two Cthon who were attempting access. The final Cthon attempted to fire a torpedo into space, no doubt to escape. The torpedo was allowed to launch, before it was shot down by the other two vessels. The final Cthon was then hunted down and killed.

The U.S.S. Endeavour was then towed back to DS13, where it will require a new warp core.

RECOMMENDATION The Cthon pose a huge threat; I echo Captain Mirazuni’s recommendation. It should be noted that the methods that we used to contain them on the U.S.S. Endeavour were ultimately effective, though risky.

Lieutenant Commander Reyes would no doubt find the autopsy of the Cthon remains to be revealing, and it could allow us to learn more about the species to counteract their methods.

RECOGNITION All crew performed well. Lieutenant Terre’s calm in ejecting the warp core was commendable, though it is recommended that people ensure nobody is on the warp core before the ejection process begins.
